No contest, the monti will over grow the tort. I have it happening in my tank. The cap grows into the tort, the tort dies where they contact, then the cap grows around and up the tort. I would suggest trimming the cap back.

Yup agreed. It wasn't the original question, but your photo shows exactly who's gonna win.
You're going to need to get rid of those green star polyps or that tort will never continue to encrust. It looks like the whole base has GSP growing on it, preventing better growth.
I agree on the GSP. I have been "raking" it from time to time to remove. Is there a way to use Kalk paste that won't have a negative effect on tort?
I have actually tried peeling off the GSP, but in most places the rock is just too rough and it doesn't peel. What I had gotten off I tried gluing to glass, but these ended up riding on back of Tuxedo Urchins
I am going to cut off left swirling section of Red Cap tonight. Just have to find another location for it until I can find a new home. In retrospect, it probably should have been placed lower in tank, but this was my first piece of SPS added some 8 months ago, and has always been central in position.
Plans are for a larger DT (36" X 36" X 31" cube) come the fall in new location, and reuse this tank as frag and secondary DT.
