Hi my name is Lyons.I am in a third grade gifted class. We have a 160 gallon tank.My question is why is it so hard to take care of seahorses? Why I asked this this question because my teacher told me that when you take care of a seahorse it is so hard it dies.

Thanks,
Lyons

your teacher might need to do more research.

they are not hard to care for. at all.

in fact, you can train them to feed in a specific time and ways ...

ask your teacher to focus on tank bred specimen, which already take frozen food.

Also, to check seahorse dot org site, for compatibility and temperature needs.

But we don't have seahorses in our tank :(

Seahorses are best done in a tank of their own as many fish in other tanks will kill or harass the seahorses until they die.
Also, anemones and some corals can sting the seahorses, while clams may close up on their tails and damage them.
Seahorses in tanks should be kept cooler than they normally would be in the wild because they are susceptible to bacteria infestations that are difficult to control in aquariums, especially when the water gets above 74°F.
Because of the bacteria problem, their tanks also need better filtration and better cleaning with larger, more frequent water changes.
Even if you do everything right, you still may have losses that are beyond your control.

Lyons,

It probably would be difficult to keep a seahorse in the 160 gallon tank in your classroom. As rayjay mentioned, seahorses are best kept in an aquarium without other fish. Seahorses like to really look at their food before they decide to eat it. Imagine you and your class mates were given a pizza and told that everyone could grab a piece -- but it took you a full minute of staring at the pizza before you decided it looked like something you wanted to eat! All of the pieces of pizza could be gone before you were ready to grab one. That can happen to seahorses, too, if they are kept with other fish.
So while seahorses may not be okay to keep in your classroom aquarium, they can be kept in aquariums with consideration and dedication to their needs.
