Why can't the Flame Angel be Reef-Safe?!?!

I absolutely want one but I'm adding rare,LE and collector corals and would hate to wake up to a $100 colony of coral munched beyond repair. I know these threads get old, but I was hoping people could tell me what kind of corals their flame angels have destroyed. I'd also like to hear people's positive experiences with them and what their personality is like.

My LFS got one in today that's about 1.5" :inlove:

ya, I think they're 50/50. I almost bought one, but it's much easier to put em in than to take em out. so I didn't. They sure are cool tho

IIRC, there was a poll about this. It wasn't even close to 50/50...


70% had never touched anything
20% had nipped, but not killed any corals
7% had killed a coral
3% were coral eaters


Those aren't the exact numbers, but they were somewhere along those lines.



(never owned a flame, but have had a potters and a CB, and both were model citizens)

I have a couple sps but mostly softies and LPS and he has never touched anything. really cool fish. I was scared at first but am glad I got him.

I think one important thing is make sure you keep them properly feed, I would guess a hungry one might start looking elsewhere for food if it needs to.

I had a Coral Beauty (died from old age) and he never touched any of my corals. He did however, kill my feather duster.

Trapping a fish is pretty easy. Try one. If it doesn't work out, trap and sell it.

my flame is completely safe with everything including polyps, zoas, sps, lps, xenia, and clams. my flame doesnt even look at the corals twice. i feed once daily and all of the fish are healthy, and not hungry. i think that is the key. make sure they arent hungry.

Could the flame's reef suitability have anything to do with where it was collected from?

I would QT any fish regardless of where it came from.A flame is on my top 5 list for sure.A friend of mine bought one and returned it in less then a week do to nipping on his corals.Like another reefer said go for it and if it doesn't work then return it.

Mine was a model citizen for almost 2 years. Unfortunately he has been missing for the past 4 days . I think the carpet got him. I will either replace him with another Flame or go with a Potters, Im not sure yet. Give it a try, most likely you will get lucky and find one that will not bother your corals.

Was this poll only referring to flames or other pygmies as well?

It's a crap shoot, and nobody is going to be able to tell you the odds. Really, it boils down to a couple of fundamental questions:

If the fish ends up being a polyp-nipper are you willing to put in the effort to trap and remove it? If not, can you live with no PE?

If you answered NO to both questions, look to another fish. If there is a YES in there, go for it.

I went back to the LFS and they wanted $72 for a small flame angel!!!!! I can't afford that right now, but maybe I can get it once my stimulis rebate comes in. I was shocked at the price, It's still cheaper than ordering online, but not by much. For that price I could get a potters angel!!!
