My Betta came in a little cup (as I'm sure almost all do). I put him from the cup straight into a 3 1/2 gal Top Fin tank (inclosed pic) that really only holds 2 3/4 gal of water. I used the water the fish stores sell (forgot what you call it) & I put in water conditioner. I just ordered a 12 gal tank for him & it should be here Wednesday. With a Betta is it still important to cycle the tank for 4-5 weeks before putting him in? Thank You! Bill

Properly cycling a tank can always be helpful by allowing beneficial bacteria to build up to process toxic ammonia quicky..

Thank You Mcgyvr! Ok, I'll cycle it. I was just thinking maybe Betta's are so hearty it wasn't as important.... Bill

You're putting a fresh water betta in a 12g tank? They don't need that much room.

While they are commonly just sold in a cup at the fish store they will be much happier and likely healthier with a larger tank. 12g is a great size for a betta tank IMO...
Its far easier to prevent toxic ammonia,etc... levels in the larger tank while allowing plenty of room for all sorts of decorations,etc...if thats your thing...

I've had bettas in a 1g bowl for over 30 yrs, they survive for many years and have never complained...water changes maybe once a year, I think the secret is minimal feedings and keeping a healthy plant in the tank.

It will be helpful to have some rock or plant in there so he can lol about within 6" of the surface. They don't, often, but their home seems to be shallow water, and especially with heavy finnage, they do take sitting-spots on occasion. And in spite of their rep, they are easily hassled by other species of fish. A pleco or aeneas catfish is an ok companion, and a female betta will PROBABLY provoke nest-building, but be sure the female is smaller than he is.
