Why do people buy flipper/expensive glass cleaners?

Is one better than the other? Will a petco glass cleaner damage my glass? I have seen used tanks for sale and they have large scrapes in the glass. What is that from?

I have found that large scrapes are caused by felt pads, people go down to the bottom of the tanks and a grain of sand gets caught in between the two magnets. Then the algae magnet is dragged across the tank creating a huge scratch, and really it only takes one grain of sand. To counter this, people buy blade magnets, like the tunze care magnet (the one I have). It works great because I can go all the way to the bottom and not pull up sand.
A felt scrubber will only damage your tank if sand gets wedged between the magnets.
Personally, I recommend the Tunze Care Magnet. The flipper is good too, however, it is a bit too overpriced for me
I have also heard people use Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser (original non toxic one), but for that, you would have to get your hands in the tank
I know I wrote a lot, but hopefully, I helped.

I have a $10 one from PetSmart. I have a Bowfront and it will pass over the side glass to the front. It's great.

Something else to consider is if u leave the magnet in the tank when u aren't using it it has more of a chance of something getting stuck on the felt pad that can scratch the glass. So it's best practice to remove the mag when u aren't using it. I always rinse mine off after I get done to make sure something isn't stuck on it.

I used to use a magnavore or something like that, but it definitely could (and did) scratch. Got a tunze care and am really happy with how much better it is. I had had to add credit card scrapers to the magnavore when going after stubborn stuff anyway, and was always extremely careful not to trap anything under the pad (but still did). With this i just put it in and do the stuff. Done.

That is my personal favorite. A cheapo shaving razor blade on a long metal pole. $13 shipped.

Also have a generic mag float, but for getting anything tough or if you feel compelled to clean your back wall. Razor on a stick.

+1 to this. You can buy replacement blades for pennies and swap them out all the time. And I dont have to worry about bumping my hands and arms into corals and getting stung, soo itchy.

I have a flipper and no longer use it. Had a bad habit of leaving it in the tank and tiny snails got in between. Now have a few minor scratches on the tank and have gone back to cleaning by hand

Just remember when people are reading do not use metal blades for acrylic tank, use plastic blade. Metal blade is fine for glass tank.

I use some cheap cleaner for the basic build up on the glass anything low or for coralline snd stubborn stuff a blade. And I use the mr clean eraser here and there for the fun of it

i use a razor blade and get inside the tank once a month . daily i use a mag float .

if you go over it daily , being sure the mag float is clean so not to scratch the glass and stay away from the sand bed. You will not have to scrape so much . I also have my lights hanging at the front of the aquarium and on a angle toward the back kinda. it helps keep stuff from growing on the front glass .
