I see a lot of people uses VHO Lightings. why is that? in these forums all i sees are T5s are much better than VHOs, but i see a lot of people uses VHOs. Why?

honestly your gonna call me nuts but.....yes they are more inefficient blah blah blah what ever but the antinics for vho's are waaaay better then t5's imo......... i didnt believe it until i plugged in my vho antinic...whoa!!!!

dont know why this came to mind.....but here goes.....imagine having a 69 camaro SS....its old..gets bad gas mileage..sounds mean as heck with its flowmasters........now imagine u have a 2001 camaro SS u know what its fun its mean its faster then the 69.....but there's some flash and flare the 69 camaro has the 2001 never will which makes it funner still

+1 VHO Actinics seem to have a different color spectrum than T5 actinics, at least to my aging eyes. I prefer the look from them, myself.

As the last two posters have noted, many reefers prefer the actinic color of the vho's and use them for dawn/dusk.

The color on VHO's as actinics is really good, as noted. Not to mention that not everybody has the same goals for their tank. While 1000 watt MH may be the best option for one reefer, a few VHO's may work just as well for someone else. It depends largely on what you want to keep in your tank.

Then again there was a thread a couple of days ago on the SPS forum that had several people that use VHO's and are getting great color & growth on their SPS tanks. Would I do it...probably not...but who am I to tell someone that they're wrong in doing so?

what's being posted online in a forum (on any topic) is only a small slice of the actual pie. VHO lighting is a much more established technology.

In addition to what Gary pointed out, a lot of longer term aquarists already have VHO, it works for them and there's no reason to change.

In addition the idea that T5 is better than VHO is a subjective judgement.

i want to know what you guys are talking about?
you have t-12, t-8,and t-5 bulbs standard... but all come in VHO too. so what do you mean VHO is better than t-5 or whatever.. of course any VHO bulb would be better than the standard of that same type.

What am i missing? (if any..just wondering)

the actinics on the vhos are amazing compared to the t5 , i suppliment my MH's with vho's

I understand what your saying.. of course a VHO of any type of same will be better...Hence Very High Output

A t-5 bulb is like a Pontiac GTO 6.0 .... A t-5VHO bulb is like the Pontiac GTO 6.6

I supplement my Solaris with VHO actinics. It makes a huge difference. VHO actinics are the best I've ever seen.

I believe the standard use of the term VHO actinic applies to the t 12 types. I use them and love them. I just like the color better than the T 5s.

so to clarify... cause i am in the market for some actinic for my tank... we are referring to any type of bulbs that has the VHO line.

i used to clean tanks for a store and some of the nicest tanks i cleaned had vho only ..and had huge colorful sps also..oh yeah they had boi balls as well(we wont go into bio balls now)
im not sure everyone has seen all the t5s out there
the blue plus is immpressive
also i might be wrong but i think the t5s are more energy efficent and produce less heat, and the bulbs might be cheaper now there are so many

Less heat is kinda wrong imo, a 54 watt t5 puts out as much heat as any other 54 watt bulb, the difference is the T5 bulbs are longer. So a 100 watt hqi vs a 100 watt t5 puts out the same amount of heat, just the t5 is longer and the heat is more spread out vs a hqi bulb! A watt is a watt no matter the light type.

As far as vho bulbs go, my 180 has vhos, first time I've ever had them for atinics and ill never switch back! The color they add is amazing! And a vho bulb is not the same as T5vho.....to different size types of bulbs.

The plot thickens...

VHO probably means something different to the newer reefers vs the seasoned reefers - The T5HO technology is now adopting the term VHO for T5HO bulbs that are overdriven. However, the oldschool definition of VHO is a T12-type bulb which is driven by a different mechanism than the T5 VHO technology.

Thus, in older petwarehouse magazines (before they were bought out by drsfostersmith) when a person would read about VHO they would see bizarre different wattage ratings ie a 24" VHO bulb rated at 75 watts, a 36" bulb rated at 95 watts and i forget what the 48" was...

Oh, memories of pouring over all this stuff and wishing I had the money for it when I was 12 years old...
