Why do we assume a large return pump is needed?

i figure on using a check valve on the display side because of elevation, but would it be good to put one on the refugium side, or is that just overkill?

BTW, do you have any more detailed pics/description of the calc reactor you made?

No, not familiar, and I have noticed them mentioned in relation to skimmers also. I am wondering whether I need one for my skimmer but I cannot figure out the neccessity.

My overflow will be external and the length of the tank. I plan to use 3 - 2" outflows, although I may reduce that to 1-1/2". The center outflow will go direclty into the top end of the skimmer body, and the skimmer will be standing in the sump and have a gate valve exit. It seems to me that there is no need for an anti-syphon in this situation as water will only be available to the skimmer until the tank water line goes below the comb.

how does the anti-siphon work on the return line? Doesnt a check valve perform the same task?

Strange links. After a while it did load, but basically those are the same pics in your gallery. That IS a really nice flange. My unit will be square and I will use cork or rubber sheet for the "O ring". I would like to learn more about the unit though. I need to build one for 1,100g system.

As far as my return line goes, I am not going up over the top, but rather returning to two 1-1/2" lines at the display side bottom. To better describe it, the front of the display will be partially covered by wall, 6 inches on each side. The tank is drilled for a variety of things, most of which will be sealed off, but I will keep 2 front bottom corner 1-1/2" bulkheads to alternate return water coming from the sump. That means those lines will remain entirely below the tank and I think could use a check valve.

Does that make sense?

My refugium will be elevated above the tank and gravity feed over the top edge so any pods etc. will arrive in one piece. Thoughts? Your avatar on nano-reef could cause a seizure! LOL...

This is definitely what I'm going to be doing on my 180G setup. Why waste tons of money only to spend more money on damn electrical bills when they can be going to fish and corals. Or even better another TANK! Great Post!

Herbert T. Kornfeld, your post is music to my ears.... since i installed a few Tunze 6100's I am currenly reconfiguring my system by diverting return water to other equipment thus significantly reducing the amount of water through the overflow. Sinse installing the Tunze's I have eliminated 4 large PHs, and and 2 pumps in the basment sump. and my overall water circulation has easily doubled.:D

He was 'moved on', but I know him outside of RC, and you can bet he is still here...reading his old posts like this one...only under a new login. He was once wetworx, but was banned over an avatar a couple years ago. When RC figured out it was him as HTK (he never tried to hide it really...apologized and let it go)...a thousand or so posts later... they banned him again because he made mention of his prior ID in his personal info. Banned right around the same time that all the experts left...and for something not even considered a user violation.

The funny thing was that even though as HTK he caught all kinds of flack because the mods were always watching him with an itchy trigger-finger...he has something like a half-dozen other logins that he uses and has never ran into any trouble.

If you want to talk with him, I know for sure he's over at the marine depot forums now (with all the experts...lol) as w3tw0rx. You might want to go over there for a bit. I liked his recent nano-reef thread (undertheradar at NR.com) on $2 phosban/carbon reactor w/ a gatorade bottle...sure has saved a few hundred dollars for many in his local reefing club. He even modded a SCWD with true 3/4" ID inlets and outlets...pretty cool stuff.

Otherwise...you never know who a person is here...people get banned and then come back as someone else later...maybe with multiple logins. I bet the actual active population is only half what it is due to this. Maybe Herbert is RGibson, maybe its Iwan, maybe its gopack, maybe its you!!!

Where's the marine depot forum? I can't find them.

hahnmeister I would guess it's more likely that HTK is floating around with say, a gallery pic of a $10 skimmer. What do you think? :D

I got some great advice from him early in my tank build and will be using some of his skimmer design, mixed with a little snailman too. It's under construction now and I am really excited about using an HTK upper end.

There was a blow-out at the beginning of the year and some long-time RC contributors got ruffled enough to go elsewhere. I think it really boiled down to mis-communication and at least one of the experts (Calfo) is still posting, but not as an offical RC contributor AFAIK.

Stuff happens. That's the nature of close relationships. I really appreciate their past contributions but due to my stroke, I am not able to monitor more than one message board and I like this one.

Herbert T Kornfeld give some great advice how to used less and get more, maybe some day he will come back it looks lihe some reef tanks could used his help. Have a good day.javascript:smilie(':D')
