Why does the base of my leather look like this?

It is hard and feels like sandpaper. Looks fibrous, almost like white rice. Any input is appreciated.

The sclerites are exposed. Has something been irritating it? I've got a Nephthea/Sin that had hairy mushrooms around the base that looked like that. Never developed into anything, FWTW.

the only thing i can think of that might be bothering it is the little bit of algae growth that it gets there. i do my best to keep it from getting it but there is only so much i can do about it. never seen any signs of poor health with this particular coral. polyp extension is good, plus they are generally very hardy. so i am assuming it wont be a problem?

Mine never developed into one. The mother is showing more now and is still doing fine.
