Why is my maroon digging pits?

I've noticed the last couple weeks my maroon is taking bits and pieces of substrate in its mouth and spitting it out all over the aquarium. is this normal?

My maroons do the same thing. Mine seem to do it to keep the sand from getting on the anemones that are close to the bottom of the tank. I've always assumed it was normal.

I had one w/o an anemone for a while and he would make piles...it was really funny to watch. If you'd pick up some of the small pieces of substrate and place them where he was "cleaning", he would just pick them up and move them back to where they were before...I have a couple of black false percs now, but they don't exhibit this behaviour...maybe only a maroon thing??

That may be it cause i have a condy in there with them but the condy is nowhere near the clown. if anybody has any other thaughts. please feel free to post. im just curiouse.

My maroon does this too - he dosent have an anenome at all - i figured he was doing it for the sake of having a safe place, he made his pit in front of a cave that he always sleeps in (or whatever fish do at night)

i thought that I read somehwere that this is a breeding sign. They clean out a place for them to lay their eggs.

maybe i am wrong also
