Why: rtn on purple valida SPS

Can anyone offer me an explanation for why one of my SPS RTN in 2 days (from what I could tell)?

A week ago, the mini colony fill and landed on a green apple Monti. Only one tip seemed to be injured and had some tissue loss at the tip. I put it back into place and ignored it for 2-3 days. I checked in on it and it still looked ok.

Then on day 5, I noticed a white SPS skeleton. I did not check on day 4. It completely lost all of its purple tissue and polyps and is entirely white/dead.

What happened? Detrivore ate it?

I have peppermint shrimp, pistol shrimp, emerald crab, snails, clownfish, mandarin fish, chromis, blue stripe cleaner goby...

How do I prevent this in future? My other SPS and LPS seem fine.

Not a sps guru, but how are your parameters, lights, and pests. Any other sps affected.

With following frags and chemical warfare, I closely monitor those situations. If it increases, I normally frag it to prevent further deterioration. If the frag makes it for awhile, then its your back up, giveaway, or trade.

My valida is very strong and my hardiest sps next to my stylo.

AMAYEU: how does "fragging it" prevent further deterioration. You are still "breaking the skeleton" and creating a "hole" in its place. That's why I did not bother "trimming" the trip. Figured the tissue recession would stop at some point and maybe regrow, or just heal itself.

No other SPS affected. That what is strange. Only thing was the "tip injury".
Granted, have not measured ALK/CALC in a while. Just add top off water & occasionally dose Kalk and/or Baking Soda (mostly when I notice my pH swing is getting wider and/or lower).

I need to measure tonight. =P

This is not scientific and just what I do. If a tip gets burnt and its getting worse, why not trim it off and prevent the spread, granted its just a small isolated area. And yes, you are correct its creating a whole and might create other issues, just like creating an "open wound for infection."

I have learned that if you wait too long it just gets worse and fast. Why not react with some preventative measure. But the root cause is something else, but this is short term fix.

Just my thoughts... any thoughts from anyone else.
