First off we were told it was not tempered, second it is not mine, third I feel bad anyway:(

Made it 3/4 through before the pop that was so loud it set off car alarms.

Do you think silicone can fix?

Sorry Phil!

that sucks!! too late now but you should of checked to see if it was tempered using the laptop/polarized sunglasses method.

4' x 4' and what is the laptop polarized sunglass tip? To prove I am not scared I am about to drill the eurobrace on my new Lemar as a few of the holes are not as big as I need, wish me luck! Broke a tank, drank some beer, and almost ready to drill my tank. Mine is not tempered for sure! I will take some pictures.

Anyone want a great deal today only I will fresh cut a couple eyes of Purple Erkle for $50, Or a couple eyes of 3G Cornbread trash for $150 to help pay for a new bottom for Phil's tank.

I do feel bad!

Extremely genorous of you! Great reefer karma!

Brings back fond memories of the center brace silicon separating on my 130. Then trying to use a large vice grip to make the glass stop bowing long enough (while full) so I could glue it back together again back in 2002. CRACK lol

laptop tip is put a laptop inside a empty tank on a white screen. Put on poloraized glasses, tilt your to the side until white screen turns pitch black. If there is no streaks in the glass then its non tempered.

I am not sure why some manufactureres would even use tempered glass. Other than allowing them you use thinner glass if it breaks you have a blow out. If I have a choice between a crack and a complete blowout, I pick crack...

And dont use strength as an excuse because the manufacturer uses that strength level to allow them to use thinner glass and reduce weight and thus cost...

Reducing weight and.cost isn't enough of.a.reason? Blow out.is.so.rare its not an issue however I've seen a hand full of crack from non tempered tanks. One completely broke in half causing $20k in damages.

Not enough of a reason at all when that savings is only for the manufacturer......They use that savings to make up for this and that, but rarely is it passed on to you.

I have seen a flying pebble from a weed wacker shatter a tempered glass side window on a car, not once, but twice in my lifetime. I agree with you that you see more cracks than blowouts. Poor design, and poorly built is always an issue.

By the time you are talking about a tank that is big enough for the cost to matter. It is custom and they do all the drilling for you... When you are drilling out a 55g tank on your own and find out the hard way they use tempered glass, you probably did not notice the price drop at any point... one day they just switched to it. They saved money and you never knew it...
