I'm really curious why my nitrates are zero. I know it's a good thing but I would love to pinpoint the reason.I use two different test kits. I also tested other tanks and kits show nitrates. Same test kit also showed nitrates in my first few months running. I have a 29g tank pair clowns and fire fish. I run two hob filters with sponges, matrix, and chemi pure elite. Before recently. I didn't do water change or clean sponges for several months. Over six at least. My nitrates always stayed zero.Do you think it's the matrix housing the bacteria that would eliminate nitrates?I feed pretty decent too. Usually twice a day.

---but I've also run a very successful 30 with about that fish load and no problem, with no more than a Penguin filter. It may just be you've hit a nice balance.
