Wife gave me a $600 budget...which camera?

Happy shooting. Canon took me over at a young age, thus I still shoot with them.

I can't see myself moving around any time soon.

my question about both the nikon and the canon is can you do simple point and shoot photos. a few years a go i bought the fuji s7000. great camera on a tripod, but i have had a hard time taking pictures with no zoom with out there being a blur do to shake.

when taking macros i always use a tripod but there are times id like to do outdoor shots with out one and still get clear pics.

The lower end canon D SLR's do not have any type of "anti-shake" built into them. Point and Shoot camera's by contrast all have something like this built in.

The auto mode with the canon will try its best to adjust the shutter speed, aperture etc. to take the photo fast enough that you don't get any shake. You can buy lenses that have "Image Stabilization" built into them, this nearly fully eliminates his problem.

I believe mose of the Nikon's have this built into the body. Correct me if i'm wrong please.

The canon (I have one) does a good job in auto mode to stop any blur, unless it's really dark out there isn't much you can do.

Great Camera!

Great Camera!

This camera is really great, I use it for our company, scenic shots of the coast (I live in Monterey, used it for Big Sur, Carmel, etc.)
Really great options and great photos. Plus there are 2 lenses and Costco is a great repudable company as well. You cant go
wrong with it. Also, Costco has a great return policy upto 3
months no questions asked, used to be life time but they changed it. So, try it you'll love it and if you dont (which I doubt)
you can return it.

I bought a D40 in 2/2007 as my first DSLR. I really like this camera. It met all my expectations and more. I have no trouble getting great shots of my family. I still have not seen good results for tank photography, but I think that it will improve when I get a tripod and learn how to adjust settings. I think you will be very happy with this camera.

Well here is the best picture out of the first batch I took w/my new D40.....This was w/the stock lens, have to save up now for a decent macro lens.

I forgot how much fun photography is!

Thanks group for the advice/help & encouragement!

Nice pic. I was looking at investing in the D40x a little down the road myself. Looks like the pic turned out great with just a stock lens.

Did you get the D40 or D40x though?

Ended up w/the D40. Went thru the features and it basically looked like about $300 for the increase of megapix from 6 - 10. I don't see myself making anything larger than 8 x 10. I also considered hard drive space. I know myself, I would be taking everything in 10 meg mode and chewing up hard drive space like nuts. Man, last night I took 100 pix of my kids. This digital SLR stuff is nuts!
