Will a tomato clown get along with a maroon one?

Long story short, I bought a 2 inch maroon clown without doing my homework. I went to my LFS to get another one and they recommended not to get another one because maroon clowns are very aggressive, especially in a tank my size 20G. I did not listen to them, bought the fish and end up taking it back because they keep fighting and I was scared eventually one of them will die.

My only option was to get 2 paired ones, but they cost $60 each so forget about it.

My second favorite fish is the tomato clown. Will my maroon clown get along with a tomato if I buy one?

Thanks for the advice

+1, those are two of the more agressive clowns IMHO.

You are asking for problems in such a small tank.

I would look into something else.

Two occs or false percs might work though in that tank. I'll let other more experienced clown keepers chime in on that.

Whatever you do, don't mix maroons and tomatoes. They'll fight until one of them is dead. I had success pairing my maroons 6 months apart from eachother. I took my big female out of the tank (70g) and put her in a bag just like the new little male, rearranged the tank, and then introduced them to the "new" tank together. They get along great.
I sometimes feel that my 70g is even too small for the maroons when they're having a particularly adventurous day. So a 20g definitely won't work, unless the clowns are really small and an upgrade is on the very near horizon. How big is the maroon you have now? I'm guessing still small?
Pairing clowns yourself works better if one is an established female, that way the fight for dominance hierarchy isn't much of a fight.

i have a pair of maroons and they fight at first to establish dominance it will stop eventually they are very tough little fish but i have never had an issue of a maroon killing another maroon and mine started off in a ten gallon and they didnt even fight in there now they are in a 55 gallon and still not any issues they dont even pick on the very peaceful fish i have i would say it all depends on the individual clowns but i would say go for trying to pair them although you will need to upgrade in the future as they dont stay to small

forgot to add that adding a tomatoe would ensure a fight to the death for sure deffinately a no go on adding a tomatoe with maroons the only other clowns you should even think about adding is another maroon

I have a maroom and two sebae (clarkii's).. the maroon is a little smaller than the others but was in the tank first. They all hold their own.

Not in a tank that size for sure. I have a tomato clown and a gold bar maroon clown in my 375. They both have their own anemones and tend to stay close to home. At first they nipped each other and did a little damage, but now they are fine for the most part. I wouldn't advise keeping them together unless you had a large volume of water. Here's a pic of the tomato in her RBTA. The BTA on the left is one I'm saving, it was very pale with short tips a few months ago (I know it doesn't look so great, but it's taking food now and is doing 100% better). I'll try to post a pic of my maroon and her BTA soon.
