Will LED Lighting Support High End SPS Corals?

I am hoping some of the veterans of LED lighting can make some recomendations regarding sustaining SPS corals in a shallow aquarium of no deeper then 12 inches in depth. If anyone has any photographs of the growth of there SPS corals from the beginning of there LED lighting to now that would be very helpful. Thank you.

No deeper than 12 inches will be no problem for led's even without optics.

Did you construct you own or did you use a modular system like one the Ecoxotics manufactures? Would you happen to have any photographs of your aquarium with the LEDs running that I coulf view?

I recently made the MH to LED switch, LOVE IT! Amazing color, my tank tamp is normal now and I dont have to buy a chiller and my electric bill is noticeably lower.

No leds will not support sps, unless you don't mind the color brown.

Thank you. I think I will stick to Metal Halides based on the information I read. Thank you for the help.

Did you read the entire thread? After all the comments that seem to be nothing more than speculation the thread actually gets pretty good with some impressive pics

Most any type of light will support SPS given enough wattage. If you like the color or see tons of growth is a separate matter. Some of the first successful sps tanks were under VHO. I think you could buy walmart 15 watt compact fluorescents and days chain 50 over you tank and "support" SPS.

Simple answer. As long as the spectrum is right.

It's never to old for us nubee's, I read them all, soak it all up like a sponge that's what the forum is for, info, info, info, sorta like location, location, location. If you have never read it it is new to you! .............................

Anyone who thinks LEDs don't work either do not know what they are talking about or they are lying. They work plain and simple. First of all what's a high end sps? Most all sps require the same things regardless of prices. Some more light then others but for the most part they all like the same parameters I love LEDs but for a 12 inch tank I would use t5s and maybe some led supplementation. You are probably 6 months away before your even close to sps corals anyways so take it slow and do your research. Good luck.

I cant see how that matters...Its just one more thread someone can read when thinking about switching.

It matters because LEDs are changing so fast that info is outdated rather quickly.

The technology used 18 months ago isn't really even relevant today. At one point in time LEDs couldn't keep SPS or other corals alive.

Should we all be reading about and studying under gravel filters?

where in this thread do you see any info (not opinions) that has changed? The most valid post is a shortcut to a thread that is current. I would completely agree if there was "real" information based posts but bringing this thread back allows people to read about LEDS and the decisions others have made (namely the link to the thread)

Considering LEDs have been keeping SPS for over two years 18 month old info could still be relevant. Especially for someone looking at a used fixture or led kits. And yes, UGF could still be looked at and are being used by some today. :D

Such garbage...If you are going to make comments like this please back it up with proof.

Such garbage 96p933? Most people who switch to leds switch back to halides, look at the thread labeled "anyone thinking of dumping leds and going back to halides". If someone like me who spends more than $1300 on leds and quits using them due to growth and color issues, there must really be an issue. It's either to hard on your pride to admit your purchase was a bust, or you have no idea what mh are capable of with sps, or you don't have leds at all and are just regurgitating what others are saying. My proof was my experience.
