I have a 65 gallon tank with 29 gallon sump, skimmer. I use a 250 watt metal halide 20,000k lamp. Based on what I've read, I'm sure that I will be able to keep montis. How would acros do with the lighting?

A 250w halide over a 65G is good enough for most acros. Obviously keep the acros centered beneath the light fixture, the monti etc on the fringes.

I have one section of rocks arranged where flow is higher. Any acros will go there. What would be a good beginner acro? I've done some research and from what I can tell, most are considered difficult to keep.

Montipora either digitata (branching) or capricornis (plating). Lots of colors, fast growers and hardy.

I would definitely pickup some ORA cultured Acros. You know what to expect in terms colours from those corals. Also pickup stuff from locals.

With unproven corals and corals that are NOT many generations down, the corals might not colour up and you dont know if its your tank or the coral. So many of those high end corals are difficult to colour up and you only ever see a single highly coloured photo from the vendor...no one else seems to ever get the same level of colour on most of those pieces.

Pick up some old school frags
pink lemonade, green slimer, Palmer blue mili, garf bonzi cali tort, etc
but not
Oregon tort
purple monster

And not all at one time...lol
