will this hurt my candycane coral?

It shouldn't unless you end up dropping the coral on the floor accidentally or some other weird accident happens (which I've never done...hehe). Is there any tissue on the frag plug (assuming not since you said it was ugly)? You can use bone cutters...or you may be able to just break it off with your hands...depending on how well it is glued on.

If the tissue is not connected to the plug in any way then it shouldn't be a problem at all. Just be slow when trying to cut the frag out.

As stated above as long as no flesh is touching, then if you have one use a drmmel to cut the plug off it it is hard to remove.

You can cut it and mount it with some marine putty to a rock or just cover the plug with putty forming it to a more natural shape.

Yes I utilize the purple marine putty to assimulate frag plugs into the rock. But Candy will grow fast enough to just cover it up without any help though.
