Will this work? Idea for long shallow tank.

The local habitat for humanity restore has some nice, long (7'9") and thick (.5") pieces of glass for sale. I was wondering how I could make these into a tank somehow that would give a cool rimless look but also incorporate some nice pieces of hardwood (probably cherry). I've attached a few images of what I am thinking. Basically, wondering if it would be possible to just route out a really long dado/slot into the wood for the glass for a bottom, do the same for end caps, and then somehow seal. I realize I'd probably need to coat the inside of the bottom and sides with something as the natural wood would just rot away.

I have seen some plywood builds, and also rimless, but nothing along these lines. Dimensions would be just under 8' long, 12 to 15" high, and about 12" deep. Would the support of the glass sitting inside the wood be enough where I wouldn't need cross braces if I keep the depth/width at about a foot?

This could be crazy and not work but wanted to see what everyone else thought. Thanks!

12 inches wide is pretty useless i think... Especially since it seems the idea would be to see both sides, otherwise why use glass on both if you build other parts out of wood.

You could always cap the end glass in wood. I love the frag tank look, and on top having wood on it would make it look finished. I think it would be cool!

For a tank that is this long, you will want something more than 12mm (1/2" nominal) glass, without a great deal of front to back bracing. Height being more critical than length only goes so far, and then it changes to length...it is easier to bend a long pane of glass, than a shorter pane of glass.
