Wilsoni Tearing???

Kole Tang

New member
I got a wilsoni a 6 days ago, and it has been very happy, expanding, eating etc.

Tank is fairly new, fish are two occelaris clowns that I got at 9:30 A.M. today. There was nothing else in the tank yesterday, but zoa frag and the wilsoni. All dead rock.

I noticed this morning that it's right side flesh has separated from the bone (overnight, I don't know what could have happened) and it has stopped opening up.

when I got it I dipped it properly.

The only thing I have noticed is a little family of bristlewoms living in a couple holes in the bone which should not be a problem

I managed to get some pics with my cell phone. It has not opened up all day and is looking kinda wrinkled above the separation.

Pics are really blue, but you can still see where it is an abnormal light purple on the sides is the tear.

Seems like your tank hasn't even completed its cycle. Your rocks are still bone white... Your ammonia probably spiked when you suddenly added the Clowns and your Coral will definitely react negatively to that spike.

To save your Coral, I would see if you can place it in a cycled tank (either a friend's or have the LFS keep it for you) until your tank is cycled.

A few more points:
1. You should never put livestock in a uncycled tank
2. You shouldn't cycle with fish/coral
3. It'll take an extremely long time to cycle with Dry rock unless you seed with a little sand from an established tank or filter media that's been in an established tank for a little while and a source of Ammonia. you could throw in some fish food or table shrimp to speed it up a little. Either way, it'll take at least 4-6 weeks for your tank to fully cycle. Only then should you slowly add livestock

Not good! I have never been able to get it to recover after it starts receeding. Check your levels, make sure the clowns are not picking on it, move it to a shaded are for a bit and feed it often. Something is off, maybe too much light or ammonia like mentioned above. Best of luck.

Tank has cycled and algae is EVERYWHERE now.

It is puffed up and happy.

I think I figured it out: The only thing I did was give it food (a big chunk that always looks small outside and huge in the tank) it was soooo big that it couldn't fit it into its mouth for over an hour its mouth was like this :0 with food in it.

It eventually spit it out and I bet that stressed it so it let go or it pulled itself of trying to eat it.

if algae is everywhere... then your tank isn't done cycling. Algae everywhere means you've got silicates or phosphates or something that is making them grow from the rock in your system. After the algae bloom dies off, and there isn't any more blooms, of things like cyano or diatoms, then you're done.
