Wiring Question

I am replacing the end cap on a 96 watt straight pin power compact. The new end cap has four wires. Do I have to match specific wires or can I randomly attach the four wires.

NO you can't randomly wire! When I replaced a cap I just did it one by one so I wouldn't screw it up.

a light is different than and receptacle when it comes to wiring. as long as the light has a "switchleg" (hot wire) and a neutral it doesn't matter where you put them. just make sure you do the same thing on both sides. hth. jake

he's talking about a fluorescent light socket. not the power to the light.

In the situation of rewiring a Compact Fluorescent socket, it is necessary to reattach the wires exactly as they were removed.

This is the identical situation of replacing a ballast; wiring it incorrectly will cause the ballast to not work, or worse, burn up.
