WOOHOO!!! The wife OK'd an UPGRADE!!!

Got the go ahead from the wife for an upgrade. May not go TOO much bigger, but rather spend the extra on really good equipment(Tunze, quality controller, calcium reactor, etc...). If you could spend my $$$, how would you set up the ultimate 58g tank? I'm sticking with my 6x39 tek fixture and want to run the new nano streams, so other than that it's fair game. Comments? Suggestions?

Your upgrading from a 55 to a 58? With that extra volume, your going to need a huge skimmer :) What don't you like about your current tank? Fix whatever your answer to that question is.

It's a bit too tall for my liking, and old, not to mention not RR. Also, I would like the extra width of a 58. Plus, anything larger would look obscene in my living room. Until we buy our house, a 3-4 foot long tank is about as big as I can justify. Maybe down the road I'll venture into the 125+ gallon territory, but for now a 58 will work perfectly for me. Not to mention with the 3ft width of my current tank, i will be able to use my sump and lights, leaving me more financial wiggle room for other goodies.

what is you current dims on the 55 tall? vs the 58? I would go with a 90 (3X2x2 high) or a 120 (4x2x2)

seedub,
for the teklight, you might want to read up on the new KZ t5 bulbs. they are supposed to be white with blue tint but with 5% red in them that we cant see. i would replace mine but i'm switching to halides on my new tank.

Current 36 long x15 wide x 24 tall.

Is that 3x2x2 a standard size or custom order?

Why not go for a largish semi-cube? Like 100g range. I can attest that going larger and just getting a longer tank isn't as cool as it sounds, however getting the depth as well as the length (height isn't that important IMO) really makes a hunk'o'reef look like it.

3x3x18" tall is nice, dunno how standard that is though, talk to Karl he got I think 110g cubish tank.

Also what do you want to keep in it? SPS? Softies? You probably can do well with a ASM skimmer, but definately upgraded the lighting to MH if you're going to do SPS.

Going to be a mixed reef. I think 18 deep is as much as I can go as floor space it at a premium. Need something that hugs the wall as much as possible. I fully understand that you guys feel that 3 gallons is not much of an upgrade. However, at this point in my reef keeping ability, I personally feel that anything bigger than a 58 or maybe a 75 may be a bit much, given my current 75+ hour work week. In due time there will be a large reef system, but for now 58 is all I desire. Not to mention the peace of mind a RR tank would give me over my current siphon setup.

you might want to do the ac jr group buy that's going on right now... as for high end equipment, there's deltec and h&s. :) that's what i went for. my wallet took a big hit...

look into an Oceanic 70 Gallon Tech Series Tank. 36" x 18" x 25"

Comes in starphire glass and eurobraced!!!

Seeing as how I just the OK about 45 minutes ago, I do not think I'll be ready to order anything before the group buy ends. I am still debating between the RK2 and the AC Jr. Leaning towards AC Jr, but the guys at DA are making some good moves in the right direction.

Would you pay $600 for this Oceanic 58g w/ stand and canopy? Or would you hold off for a better deal, be it new or used? A bit coincidental that it just popped up on craigslist after I began to think about an upgrade, don't ya think?

interesting water bottle there :) nuuze, saw your elos setup. that's sweet!!!!

Thanks Sidog1! :) The bottle in the refugium is tigger pods. :)

I'd just stick with the tank you have, height is very cool, you can keep lps at the bottom, sps toward the top. Lots of room and 15" deep is pretty nice. I would upgrade your tank if you think your equipment needs updating/upgrading. If you're not looking for more water volume (which you're not since 58 ~ 55g), you should just spend the $$ building up your system. You can take it down, drill it, et.. Maybe you can even find someone to hold your corals, and you can just store your rock in a trash can.

Due to the age of the tank, I'm fearful of drilling as I'm unsure as to the type of glass it is made of. And I'm growing less fond of the height every day. i've got a buddy who runs a LFS and he will be holding my junk until the new tank is up and running.
