Working with What I Got... Need Some Help

I'm fairly new to the hobby of reef keeping as well as photography and I want to learn how to take some great photos with the camera I got.

I own an Olympus C750 4.0 megapixle

Specs are - 6.3 mm to 63 mm Lens, f2.8 to f8.0 Aperture, and 16 to 1/1000 shutter speed.

I've managed to get some good shots but most don't come out focused especially when shooting with just the actinic on. Here are a couple of decent shots I've taken so far-

They were probably out of focus because your shutter speed was too slow. Keep your ISO at 100 and get a half way decent tripod. Then you should be good to go. I am impressed you got what you did, so you show a lot of potential. Notice the particles in the water in the 2nd photo. They are streaking by like meteors. With your actincs on, you see the same effect, but instead of particals streaking your hands are streaking, which makes everything streak. Its like writing with a gel pen and then smooshing the ink to one side or the other. Get a tripod and your set.

I would agree, pretty good photos considering the camera (don't take that the wrong way) The 1st image is very good...

Do I need to get lens filters or any thing?

I'd just play around with the camera settings, not sure how much control you have with that particular camera as I don't know what settings it has. Best thing to do is try and stabilize the camera either thru using a tripod or setting it on something and using the timer. Clean the glass and try and let all the everthing settle, then take pics, otherwise they are great images...

I'm able to control the f stop, aperture, and shutter speed, so pretty much everything. I'll get my hands on a tripod and post some new pics when I take them. Thank for the advice.

You might also want to manually drive the white balance.

I think filters are more in the DSLR arena. I wouldn't bother with them on a point and shoot.
