Anyone know what this little fellow is? It's hard to tell in the pics but he's actually on the glass, not the rock. And he's pretty small like 1" long.
I was thinking spaghetti worm as well, but I thought they all lived in the sand? I googled Cirratulid and got some results on something called a Hair Worm. That looks right but it says they generally live in the top 1/2" of substrate.
Guess this guy is on the wrong side of the tracks, hope the turbo snails don't beat him up for being on their turf lol they own the glass like there's no tomorrow
A little late, but I was searching the forum for pictures of Cirratulids and ended up in here. This is indeed a Cirratulid (Hair worm) and not a Terebellid (Spaghetti worm). You rarely see see the full bodies of the spaghetti worms out and about like that, as they live in permanent tubes. It's usually a sign of stress with them, if you see them out. The Hair worm, albeit usually out of site as well, is commonly the one you'll see on the glass. They don't have a permanent home and although they like to stay in a horizontal type fashion under the sand, they have more freedom to move around.
Because of the Spaghetti worm's tube home, their gills are at the top of the head. No sense trying to breath inside the tube itself. The rest are feeding tentacles that come out from the top only.
The Hair worm's feeding tentacles also come out of the head region, but only two of them are for feeding. All the other tentacles you see are gills to breath with and go all along the body. They poke them above the substrate to breath when they are in their normal horizontal position.
Zimmer, you have a PM requesting the use of your picture
Thanks for the positive ID!! Hopefully this thread will help other people looking for the same info And yes, absolutely you can use the pictures, that's great! Now I wish I had cleaned the glass better that day LOL
