Worth trying to save this green carpet

DVM in training
LFS got in a green carpet (can't even tell which kind) that has basically ditched all of its zozanthellae. They have it in a tiny cube under the end of some PC lighting. They only want $55, though so I am seriously considering trying to save it. I have a dual 150w MH over my 55 so the light will be enough as long as he chooses to eat while he regains his strength. Mouth isn't tight but I have seen much worse survive.

Do you think it is worth saving? I kinda have to make up my mind before one of the dumber reefers from around here grabs it thinking it'll live in their 180 lit by PC lights....

Bit the bullet... Headed home to drip acclimate. Keep your fingers crossed for him (and me)

this is after she was laying down with no air and looked like she was dead about ten min after she getting water in her and mouth starting to close up and the pictures above on my other forums are about 20 min after this picture , is this normal ?

mine has been in since last night. Since my tank is bare bottom i put him into a tupperware filled with sand and turned the flow WAY down all night. This morning he was attached to the inside wall of the tupperware with part of his food and the other part was digging down into the sand. His mouth was still very slightly open (less than the size of a dime) and he still wasn't sticky.

I decided to start turning up the flow a little bit to see if it would entice him to move, or bury his foot more, or do anything at all and to my surprise he extended his oral disk a bit and tightened up his mouth. When i went to turn the tupperware so that his disk wasn't being blown over the rest of him my hand DID stick a bit to his tentacles so he must be feeling a bit better. The MH will come on soon for about an hour (gonna work him up to a full lighting schedule so if you have any tips I'd appreciate them), and we will see how he looks. I may try to feed him a small piece of shrimp.

So far he looks like a green haddoni that would be ~8-10 inches across if he flattened out his disk

pics to come later

Pics once the lights came on... he didn't take any shrimp even when i tried to get him to play "tug of war" so it seemed alive but he did stick some of the brine/mysis/pellets that i fed to the tank.

Other than being bleached it actually looks pretty good.

Any deflating or gaping mouth issues occurring?

So far so good... His mouth tightened shut once the flow increased and he has been like that ^^ all day. I bet he could inflate a bit more but I wouldn't call him deflated. He looked ROUGH in the drip acclimation but I know he was just changing out his water

Thanks!

is it fairly common for a Haddoni to deflate after lights out? they went off and his foot is exactly as it was but his oral disk is now only 3-4" across. i assume he is just adjusting still. mouth looks good (less tight than when light was on, but not gaping wide at all)

I'm just learning too. But they can retract completely in the sand if they want and mine behave differently at night. They move. Expand. Contract. Etc.
I would be more concerned with a gaping mouth OR espcially if it spits out zooxanthelle. (looks like mouse poop) But yours probably already expelled most of its zooxanthelle.

I would be VERY careful if I were you. Your tank is way too new for an anemone. If it dies in the tank, it might pollute your tank, killing some other corals. keep an eye on it and remove right away if it dies.

Thanks!

Yes, they generally contract at dusk/nighttime for expelling waste and mine seems to hide at night and come out during day the for light.

They will also move at night, care with the power heads.

When annoyed/irritated they can also hide in the sand for days at a time. Fascinating little buggers, goodluck. Parameter swings are fatal, biggest issue with new tanks things are being settled out still. Be ready to treat in a QT and make sure to change a good amount of water weekly.

HE ATE TODAY!!!

I was just a small piece of raw shrimp about the size of his mouth and it took him a good 10 minutes to move it from the edge into his mouth but it is a small victory on the road to recovery. Also, I have ramped the lights up to a full 8 hours because he seems REALLY open/happy when they are on and much more depressed/deflated when they are off

24 hours after eating I came home from class to see that he had moved his foot into the center of his tupperware container and (i assume) down to the bottom of it rather than having it partially buried on the sidewall. I will take this as a good sign that he is 'taking root' so to speak and is happy where he is. I'll try feeding again on friday to see how he does and then I'll probably do another water change on Saturday or Sunday.

Continue feeding it on a set interval. Not too much, not too little.

Friday would be 4 days and I figured I would give it 1-2 days after that to digest and expel waste and then change the water. I will keep the meals small (about the size of his mouth when closed and ~1/4" thick at most)

How does that sound for those of you who have helped haddoni nems recover in the past? I assume the feedings will allow him to regain his strength without relying on the zooxanthelae which will allow them to recover more quickly because they can focus on multiplying their numbers rather than feeding the organism.

If anyone has any scholarly articles on these creatures i would love to read them in my spare time (lol spare time - yeah right). I am a veterinary student and saving this creature's life was a huge factor in why I picked him up rather than leaving him behind. As far as my understanding goes anemones don't really have a set lifespan and can, in theory, live forever even if it is only by splitting off clones... I couldn't just let him decline and die at the LFS without taking a chance to save him and, so far, it appears to be paying off.

You can tell when they are ready to eat. Its all a part of keeping them. Their tentacles change. I can't describe it. My carpet kinda shifts its tentacles around in a shaking motion.

While I definitely appreciate the sentiment behind your reply it doesn't really help me figure out how often to feed lol
