Would anyone hold a nem for me?

Hello fellow reefers,

I have a 30 cube with a GBTA a pair of tomatoes and a McCoskers. My fish have ich and I am thinkin the best way to treat is hypo-salinity. I can't really set up a hospital tank so I was wondering if anyone would hold the nem for me while I treat in the main displey. I don't know if people do this or not, but if anyone can think of a better solution, I'm open.

Thanks guys, hopefully it can get sorted out.

You could set up a hospital ASAP, i have a 10 gal i would sell cheeep. I have never had anyone succed in treating the display.

What side of town are u in? I have a tank with 3 btas. I dont mind keeping another one in there for awhile. Pme if ure interested. I'm on the nw side of town

No luck with Pme i am to new. I would go to a locall petco and get a 10 set up, start with your water and some media form your filter along with quick start like Cycle. No sand or rock.
Here is a good hyo article.
Good luck,
I have also taken my sick yo a lfs for quarintine.

Some may disagree but IMHO if it is true ich and you have a healthy tank with stable conditions it shouldn't be fatal. I have 4 tangs and have never lost any to ich. They have had it. Stress will bring it out in them when there immune system is lowered. What do you guys think.

Thats what I was hoping but it has gone and come back so I'm thinkin I better treat it.

FishHead, why cant you treat a display? I was thinkin about taking out the rock and most of the sand and just put it in buckets to keep it "live" and re-aquascape once I raised the salinity back up again.

Just fyi my understanding is ich will run its course in about 8 months if you don't add new fish. Your fish will build up immunity to the strain you have and it will die.

Time is the only way I know to cure ich in the tank, 4 to 6 weeks minimum with no fish.
The inck comes and goes as part of its breeding cycle and will get stronger each time. I have heard of fish surviving ich, just not mine.
Copper will get in anything you have in the tank.

I would get a small tank, cycle it, and treat your fish with cupramine. Then let your display go follow.

I would go 10 weeks fallow to be certain:

You could risk infecting your tank by holding the nem unless you don't have fish in your tank. Then you would have to hold it 10 weeks to be certain no ich remains.

IMO, it can be done and really depends on the species and health of the fish. Not placing fish in QT is dangerous, what happens if you happen to get oodinium? Visit the Fish Disease Treatment forum to see how many people don't have the same luck you have.

I have had ich in the past and it does come and go but I personally can't stand seeing my fish scratch so I QT everything (even live rock).

I've never seen evidence of this and have not read this before, do you have any links to describe this?

I don't remember where exactly I read it but I found it mentioned it in here http://www.seahorse.org/library/TESTING/ich/newich.shtml. When I googled it. I agree copper as the only way to cure. Just remember never add copper to your display. It leaches into the rock and glass if I remember correctly. Quarantine is the only way to go. I bet a local lfs would hold you fish and nem while you go fallow. They often treat there tanks with copper. I wouldn't absolutely trust hypo salinity.

so what I'm hearing is its pretty necessary to setup a hospital tank and just leave the display with the nem alone. that way the main tank is unaffected and the fish can be treated with something like cupramine in a more controlled environment.

If I were to add more fish in the future would it be wise in theory to get them now so they go through the same medication treatment as a sort of quarantine or would they become infected even with the medication?

They could become infected but if you get a healthy fish and treat it fairly quickly it will be fine depending on the type of fish.

It really depends on the size of your qt and the fish you want to treat.
