would you consider diving an expensive hobby?

The college I'm going to has a scuba diving club but my mom lost her job and because of the economy I don't think I'll be able to realize that dream.

What do you think? I'd love your imput.

yeah scuba diving is very expensive.

in most cases worse than reefing.

plus you will always want to get that new mask or dive suit so you can see better and more comfortably, or that new rebreather that is only 5000$ (which is realy cheap)

It is like reefing, expensive to buy the equipment then you just have to fill the tanks which is about $15.00 or less.
If you have to pay someone to take you out in a boat then, yes it will be expensive.
I have my own equipment and boat so it is very cheap if you don't add the cost of the boat

ugh. that bites. i hate being broke, especially living this far away from the ocean.
Where do you live..?

Classs are relatively inexpensive, with the startup costs being another couple hundred for mask/fins/snorkel/booties... Generally $500-600 out the door for OW and most places, which includes the gear you must buy and the rentals.

Depending upon where you live, you may get lucky enough to meet up w/ folks that have enough gear to cover a new dive partner.

what level do you wonna be? just a recreational diver? than we are talking about $1500-2000 for the gear. once you got the gear you have to spend the money on the fills. wich is $3 for air and $6 for EAX, plus visual and vip for your tanks annual checks. and once you are into it. you are addicted! that's how I started it and now this is my job. Been in the water here Gulf of Mexico every day.

Tim has a good point about the chances of hooking up with locals in the dive club that might have enough extra to loan you or even be able to loan you gear on day they aren't diving, but you are. Especially a college dive club were everyone understands being a broke student. Sometimes you can also get some good deals on used equipment as people upgrade. As a broke college student, you just need to be resourceful ;)

It's cheap enough. Get certified, rent gear, dive when you can. Take a cruise for cheap travel.

Good luck.

I didn't think goths were divers. What if you get a tan? You wont be that lovely pasty white anymore.

So? What does that have to do with you? You're in COLLEGE now, sweetie... Time to get your own job. :)

...Or, you can sit around, jobless and broke, and complain about it and think up all of the reasons why you can't dive.

My Girlfriend is in the same position... She is in college and paying for it her self (with very little help from FAFSA).
She is actually starting a Dive club at her school... But they don't have much money either...
They might not even go on Dives, Because you don't have to certified to join the club... They might just talk about it and have speakers.
My guess is your Dive club would be a good idea for you to join, unless you have to be certified to join at your school.
Because IMO, your highest expense would be the Classes Unless you want to buy your own gear as opposed to renting it.
Diving is expensive, But school is even more so... And which one is priority? I imagine it would be your education...
