In south FL, They are having a bad issue with Lion Fish. I have seen pics of hundreds of them on the reef. They are eating native fish.

so, if that bill passes that means everyone will have to turn over their corals and fish from their reef tanks? The tropical fish in the FW tanks, and reptiles too??? Even if you already have the animal, someone can just come and take it?
Is someone gonna go door to door to check on what animals you have in your house? I don't understand. Guess I need to read it again...

I've not read this bill at all yet, but I can't help but wonder how much of the reaction is over reaction. I collect minerals, and recently a bill was passed that was "The end of fossil and mineral collection" according to many in the hobby and people afraid that the government would raid their homes demanding that the prove when and where they collected specimens, but once you read into the meat of the bill, essentially is was defining protected lands and some government properties as non-collecting areas, and most all of them where all ready off limits.

I would be really surprised if it passes, like it is anyway. It is a little extreme. Look here at who the sponsor is. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-669 She is in GUAM! Why would she care what comes into the continental US?

The bill itself will not be passed. But a specific species bill will!!!! For example, I used to own a Quaker Parrot, it is illegal to own or breed in the state of Tennessee and many states because it can cause some damage to crops and it is able to adapt to different environment. It can even live up in NY. I have observed this parrot living out in colonies down in FL and it's quite neat. I got it while I was living in Iowa where it is not illegal yet. One of the smartest parrots I've ever owned.

Michael, and to a large extent, bills like that make alot of sense.... I guess we are all fortunate enough to be in a hobby in an area that the animals have no chance to adapt to the environment?

It makes sense I agree, but it doesn't make sense to what the power company do to their babies when they remove their nests off the poles. They kill them or just left them laying on the ground to fend for themselves. There is a Quaker Association that goes around to pick them up though. Another one is Parrots of Telegraph Hill, there's even a documentary on it if anyone wants to watch. It's about Conures that was let out in California and they were able to adapt and raise youngsters. They all have the will to survive, it's really not their fault that they got out in the first place, it has to do with people period! I picked up two parakeets outside of Sam's Club parking lot sitting on the pavement. They got out from someone's cage or being released. One or the other, they will NOT survive since they were raised in captivity. Plus they were only about 7 months old at that time. The cold weather will kill them too. I'm glad I found them and give them my home to stay. I don't agree with those bills, but I do think that people needs to be educated on these type of situation, even make them take classes before ever owning a pet.

Yep, I agree with you 100% on that. It's just a shame that to me many of the bills that are passed in this country on the surface seem like another way of the government attempting to control people, but if they weren't passed, people are stupid enough to do it, hurt themselves, etc, and then we all end up footing the bill for their stupid actions. Oh well, such is life, I suppose.

Section 3f says:
"Animals Owned Lawfully Prior to Prohibition of Importation- This Act and regulations issued under this Act shall not interfere with the ability of any person to possess an individual animal of any species if such individual animal was legally owned by the person before the risk assessment is begun pursuant to subsection (e)(3), even if such species is later prohibited from being imported under the regulations issued under this Act."
So we can keep fish we already have even if this passes. The bill doesn't include or exclude corals. It seems geared more toward animals.
