Wow... Ice White SPS

Saw this incredible coral at the LFS the other day. Ice white fading to cloud blue at the tips. First time I've ever seen it. Anyone got a trade name on it?

He just fragged it so this weekend I'll be picking one up.

Wait a few days, I have a hunch that it will turn brown. However, I got a one frag from Dr Mac that stayed white (ok, it turned off-white) and encrusting already (same off-white color).

Do you know what species it is? I'm assuming it's a type of Acro, but without a pick or (at the very least) a species name, no one's going to be able to tell you much.

Or am I just not seeing a picture that you loaded?

sounds like my pearlberry (old pic)

sounds like possible bleaching from shipping? A pic would be good. Millepora are especially notorious for this.

I bought a white colony once and it turned the most stunning purple I have ever seen. Unfortunetely I lost the colony though. I believe now it was AEFW, but I hadn't been in the hobby very long when I had it and didn't realize what was going on in time. It kills me to look at these old pictures, I really wish I still had this one.

Here is a picture. And I am totally serious that it was bleach white, with blueish tips when I bought it.

The best ID I got was Acropora Suharsonoi.

I was talking about the original post in the thread. You piece looks like it was a cultured lokani that was chopped from the side of the original colony. Watch to see if the tips round a bit more in your tank.

There was a LFS here in SoCal (Pettown, no longer there) that used to have an awesome acro in there display tank that was pearly white all the way up to the tips which were very light purple/blue. It kinda looked like a Valida but thick spaced out branches like a stag. Wish I still had a piece of it, mine browned out when I got it home.

Maybe some old school SoCal'ers can help me with the discription a little better if they remember it. :)

When I got that 1 in the picture, the LFS had just gotten a shipment of about 8-10 of these white colonies. They were all pretty similar though. I wish I had a picture from when I first got it, to show how white it really was.

How about this one? It's the size of a big softball. It's hard to tell in this pic but most of the tips are a nice blue color.

Might be worth taking a chance. However truly white corals are pretty uncommon, especially if its a recent import. They are nice if you can find them. Here's a pic of my ice white acro with purple tips about 2 months later:
