Wow... Ice White SPS

Loosely based in 20 plus years of this hobby, the original question was regarding WHITE acros/and not ones with pigmentation wich is what you and your buddy Hogan are describing.
QUOTE]

The original post said "Ice white fading to cloud blue at the tips"... I guess it is how you read into it, but Im thinking that this means that it is not "Pure White", and that it does have some light blueish pigmintation (Ice-White). When I hear "Ice White", it brings to mind corals such as have been mentioned that grow well in home aquaria and keep their "icey" color quite easily, right? This seems fair to say and more on topic to the OP's intentions rather than a debate on whether "WHITE" acros exist. Instead you are trolling for a debate on "Pure White" acros. I'm sad that I got involved with a troll on RC, I thought I knew better by now. I agree that "pure white" acros probably don't exist.

Sorry mods, I'm done now.

I think most of us agree at this point. My only concern are some new or newish reefer purchasing these bleached corals from the LFS thinking that they are beautiful. I have witnessed these threads before on my local forum. Hey look at my ice white beauties....and in this one instance in particular I asked for updates on those corals till there was none left (I believe he purchased 3 and and all were dead with-in a few months).

I am open to the idea that there are healthy, ESTABLISHED, white body corals....especially if they have colourful tips.

No offence to Rizup...but this would be an example of bleached. IME

How about this one? It's the size of a big softball. It's hard to tell in this pic but most of the tips are a nice blue color.

And this one too. Notice how both are newly shipped (aquired). To me purchasing either of these corals is a waste of money. Again not trying to offend anyone this is just my experience (at one point I would have purchased corals like this too and believe me they didnt do well).

i picked this up the other day

No offense taken - Live and learn :lmao:

We'll see how it does after a few more months

Even if some are white at the LFS, I think you can tell which are going to recover and which won't. Its still a guess though, but if they have PE and maybe some tip color there is a decent chance they will pull through if your tank water is good and stable enough. Sometimes you can get them at reduced prices and it might be worth the risk. Not always of course.

This is a frag from a frag pack I received from Dr. Mac. It has not colored up much. Starting to encrust . This looks more like eggshell white.

Well I saw this guy at the LFS and made me think of this thread. Not sure what everyone will think of it but I dont feel this one is bleached. It has nice blue tips...more creamy body and good polyp extension. We will see if it holds or if the body goes greenish....if it is bleached it is only slightly bleached...I think the health is still good.

I have 2 whitish corals in my tank right now.

Initially received... from an extremely nutrient poor tank.

Interesting, what do you mean by nutrient poor tank and how does yours differ?, are you talking about higher nitrates in your tank, or you just feed a lot of coral food?, And what type of coral food do you feed?.

I have some pale corals specially green monti caps.

So I went back and picked up a frag. Turned out it was a bleached bottlebrush. Now its a nice powdery blue sitting in my tank next to a candy cane acan.

Here's an older pic of my white branched acro w/pigment and not newly imported. Also, my tank certainly wouldn't be considered a nutrient poor environment.

I wouldnt call the a white acro it has very nice color. Its a desalwii though and the body of those are known to be white when they are happy.

LOL ...
I love this hobby and it's "marketing gimmicks" where they give a cool name to a coral based on the color and everyone flocks to it. This is one of the reasons I totally loathe the naming of corals with these 'trend names'. It's ridiculous.

White corals are bleached corals. White corals with light colored anything polyps are unhealthy corals, guys. Very occasionally you might find something 'cream' colored but usually, those darken up in time. Bleached doesnt always = dead If it's got polyps it's alive still and can be saved at least. . Just don't go thinking it's some LE or SR or whatever other silly acronms that people assign to a coral. Don't be fooled by a fancy name and the seller convincing you it's some rare thing. I can get acros like that all day if I shut off my aquarium lights. :p

Oh and ... Anemones that are white or clear are also unhealthy - since we are on the subject of lacking color.

*shakes head*

+1 On coral names. I'm ok with calling a coral by it's growers name but still at least trying to ID it species although not always easy or accurate. For example A. tenuis can be known as ORA Tenuis or TCN Tenuis but it's a tenuis none the less.

as for white corals.... they will almost always darken or die. Here is wild colony I purchased about 10 months ago.

i love these threads as well.so many people buy these"white acros"and they are bleached, pure and simple.the only acros that really are "white" are stuff like the desalwiis and they have colored tips and coralites like some of the pics in this thread.gasman and dvanacker are 1000% correct in everything they have said, these corals are newly shipped and stressed and bleached and IF you are lucky they MIGHT survive.desalwiis, some planas, and a few sarmentosas have white colored bodies with colored tip, coralites, and polyps when happy.please stop buying these "white" corals because they are not going to last in the long run and will either change to the real color or die.

I have Delsawii, Batunai, and Cerealis that are white with colored corallites. Me Echinata is sorta white with blue tips.
