Wow...

So I put this piece of base rock in the other day, and crabs just seem to run in to and hide. I've been able to take out 3 or 4 baby Gorilla crabs so far. I didn't think there were that many, but almost every time to I shine a flashlight on it, there's another one hiding in it.

I only put it in there to see how long it would take to color up, but it seems to work pretty good.

Urgh, I had a heater malfunction and put the tank up in the high 80's. All of the orange on the top left rock pretty much melted off.

Compare that to Day 1:

It's pretty upsetting to say the least, especially since I had my new fish from DD arrive today.

I had to put him in my 5 gallon Mantis Shrimp tank for now, until I get the 20 back in shape. So far I did a 10 gallon water change, will do another in a few days if it doesn't clear up by then.

Sorry to hear about your misfourtune, hopefully the tank will recover quickly, with little loss. Like your new fish.

I was hunting gorilla crabs for months when I first got the rock and I think I got them all out by now. I got quite a few pistol shrimps too, from neon orange to neon green ones. The other day I saw an almost all black one hiding next to a snail.

All of the sponges and tunicates on mine slowly died off but I knew it was just a matter of time. I do wish I knew more of how to keep them alive when I had them because they really brought a lot of cheery oranges, reds, and purples to the tank but this was my first tank. Hell, even today I have no idea how to keep those alive!

The tree sponges and ball sponges I got from Richard are still alive though.

I see you also got a decorator arrow crab hitchhiker. I watched mine grow from a tiny spec to about 2 inches big. Unfortunately he started picking on my zoanthids. I saw 2 neon green zoas on his legs then he started to actually eat another set. Sadly I had to let him go.

I do also have an emerald crab and he grew really fast as well. His body is about the size of a quarter now. His claws aren't sharp so I figured he'd be fine to leave in there but I give everything in the tank 3 chances. If they attack anything 3 times I take them out. So far he just likes to scavenge around and doesn't bother anything.

lol ya right...i haven't even tried to get any out nor have i seen a reason to as they (so far) haven't bothered anything and are actually really cute...these guys peek out from time to time and very quickly retract back into their crevice as soon as they see any movement so i have no clue how you would get them out if you really wanted to besides taking the entire rock out and trying to flush them out that way...the only hitchhikers i've purposely taken out are cirolanid isopods, all gorilla crabs, a large decorator crab that i caught destroying corals, a small decorator arrow crab that started eating zoanthids, and dark colored bristle worms if i see them in the sand and can catch them...otherwise i love the life that came on these rocks

Dang that really sux about your heater...Hopefully some of it will grow back.
Haha, OK, I thought that fish was a sponge of some sort at first :lol2: I reread where you said " DD" and realized the thing has eyes.
That little fish is probably the most adorable thing I've ever seen :inlove:
I've been wanting an angler for a while now ( angler right? ) How big is he?

Yep. It's a Painted Angler (A. pictus) that I got off of Diver's Den last week. Right now, he's a little under 2". The measurement on DD said 1 7/8". If your looking for an Angler, I would definitely suggest looking at Diver's Den because there have been a ton of them up lately. He is definitely one of my favorite fish, tied only with my Ray. :spin1: I love the way he moves: like a giant in slow-mo. It's a nice change from the constant swimming of Tangs and whatnot. I'm uploading a bunch of pictures of him right now, I'll post a link to them so I don't spam up the page. :spin2:

Ray? As in...stingray? At 16.....liar. lol
Is that a Wennerae mantis? Where'd you get him? I'm thinking on saving up for one from TBS. I'd be a little concerned the mantis would take a chunk out of the angler.

I really like the angler...I'm surprised I didn't see it on DD. Is the 20 going to be his own tank?

Haha, yes, a stingray. There's a bunch of pictures of him on that Photobucket account. I'm not positive on the ID, but I'm pretty sure it's a Wennerae; I got him from my LFS. I would definitely recommend getting one from TBS. My mantis hasn't shown any interest in attacking fish. If I didn't stick feed him, and made him hunt, I'm pretty sure he'd starve... lol, so I'm not really worried- I'm more worried about the Angler eating him whole... xD

You have a shark too??? What size tank are they in? I love your Volitan. Has his fins healed up? ( If I remember correctly...it was your thread that I saw this) Mind telling me what extra you do for the shark and ray? As far as maintenance goes?

They're in my 220. The only real thing I have to do is stick feed them because their tankmates are always trying to get all the food. They're starting to learn that when they come up to the top it's easier for them to get food. And yes, the Vol's fins are all healed now, and I can pretty much watch him grow. :mixed:

So Richard gave me another 20lbs to replace the damages, and so I took some of the old rock out and put it another tank that had mostly base rock in it, and then put it all in the tank, except for one piece. Right now, I just have it all sitting in the tank, I will have to do make it look good later because I have family coming over.
