Wrasse acting like he is dying then fine

My pink velvet wrasse was lying on the sand last night (after lights out)he was covered in sand. I mean the sand was stuck to him and he was breathing large deep heavy breaths. I though for sure I would wake up to a dead fish. No now he is fine and acting normal.
Any ideas?


Did he maybe get startled out of a sleep?

I would bet he was sleeping unless he starts acting weird tonight.

never happened again, maybe he was sleep walking. I never saw anything like it

fairy/flasher wrasses sleep in a 'cacoon' of mucous- he probably was asleep and drifted out of his bed.

One time in december my clown was kind of acting like that - laying on his side and breathing heavy. When I went up to the tank he swam up and acted like he was fine. I checked the parameters and everything was in check. He has acted fine since.

Maybe he thought it might be fun to freak you out :worried2:
