In my opinion it is a preadult male. Probably will be bullied by any full fledged male/supermale as it will feel that it would be threatened by this fish becoming male, especially with a female around.

Yep. Sub adult male. Looks just like mine. When I had my SM the little guy just stayed out of his way. Now that he has a girl around all to himself he's coloring up more.

what about puting the submale into a clear box on the inside of the tank to see how the other male reacts.

The only problem is possible damage to the mouth.

if he shows aggression i will remove immediately. i assume if he doesnt like him he will go right after him.

just an update.... i added him to the tank with no problems at all. all 3 rhomboids get along well with no aggression. i will continue to watch closely though.
