1/4" clear mesh.

1/2" anything is too big.

Not a subject change at all. You can't keep a wrasse from jumping; you can only keep them in when they jump.

My Lunar wrasse now has hit the glass lid on my tank too many times to count! Not from fear, from excitement at meal time. Boom! So far no injuries, but he beats up my GSM Clown one more time, I'm leaving that lid OPEN. HAH!
You are indeed playing Russian Roulette with your fish, especially WRASSES. I remember one well known member of this Forum losing a Regal Angel! (Sorry Peter.)
