Sorry just re read the reef safe part ....you will have to omit a few I posted just read the post some of your favs and wanted to give you some ideas....these are all in a 540 with tons of other fish and seem to be thriving although feeding is a little out of hand lol but worth it....

So many amazing wrasses. My favorites are mystery and leopard.

However to tag on and ask a question with so many experts on this thread, and yes I know all fish jump, but which wrasses tend to jump more than others? Really want to add a fairy wrasse to may rimless but having a feeling it would find the carpet pretty quickly.

There are so many terrific wrasse available now a days that we are spoiled for choice, even if it takes a bit of a wait. I like the yellow coris wrasses as a natural predator for flatworms and bristle worms. For overall enjoyment, my favorites have always been the simple Leopard Wrasse and I keep them in a trio. I have had the black wrasse and a pair of Hawaiian Flame Wrasses who had uncanny beauty - but I still like the Leopard- colorful and peaceful and active post acclimation.

I enjoyed having a mystery wrasse but feel they seem to do better in a larger system, I had one in a 125 and it didn't get territorial, but I have heard in smaller systems they can get that way and like the six line should be one of the last introduced.

I love the Chaoti and Kuteri. Tried to get a Kuteri and it didn't make it through shipping. Both are at the top of my list for adding, but I will need a bigger system.

Just a reminder that they do need an established system populated with amphipods or other live food. Many people have great success with getting the wrasses to change to frozen vs live foods. Also, the substrate is important as The leopard, Choati, Kuteri, Black, Blue Star, etc bury themselves at night or in stress times. Oolytic sand is great. I have taken to a mix of standard sand mixed with sugar fine and it seems to be working out well. I don't like sugar alone as it almost cements.

I never quarantine the wrasses as they get stressed out really easy...I know you will find a number of opinions on this and there are definite pro's and con's but I have had the best luck going from acclimation right into the DT and they bury for a day or two to de-stress.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck with your choice...can't go wrong.

I disagree as far as needing an ample pod population only due to the fact that IME leopards Iv'e kept are pretty readily accepting of prepared foods almost as soon as they arrive, and as long as your feeding small amounts throughout the day you shouldn't have a real problem with keeping them. It's the stress of shipping that is the decider of the fish living or not.

I do agree however that leopards in particular do not fair well when quarantined, and should be introduced straight into the DT. And as far as Iv'e seen they are highly disease resistant so it shouldn't pose much of a risk to your DT either.

It would be a waste of time to add a wrasse without having a mesh top on your tank. They are all more than likely going to jump at some point. It's just the nature of the fish.

+1 to the mesh top. I have a rimless and becuase I want to keep wrasses I have a mesh top. As they say it isn't if they will jump it is when.

I have found that an amply pod population is an element of success with keeping leopard wrasses. I absolutely agree that most will transition to prepared/frozen foods. I have not found many LW ship with much weight on them and so I prefer to have desired foods (pods) and ensure the success. It is all personal experience and preference. You can get by without pods - to me it just isn't worth the chance.

+2...

I have over 30 wrasses in my tank...my 'top picks' are Lineatus, Hooded, 8 line Flasher, and Red Velvets

I'm a huge fan of wrasses. Here's my C. Earlei pair, normal vs excited. The male is now a large 4"+ terminal male.
