Wrasse recommendation for a 40g

Looking for suggestions for a wrasse for my 40g breeder mixed reef. I love the look of a Christmas / Ornate Wrasse. Would that be a good choice? If not is there anything with similar coloration that would be better?

an X-mas wrasse is not a good reef fish. i would say stick to fairy wrasse, six line, 4 line, corris or flasher wrasse. although even a flasher and fairy wrasse prefer a bigger tank. there are others you could try but they are abit harder to keep and even harder in a smaller tank.

lastly make sure you have a very tight fitting lid on your tank before keeping any kind of wrasse as they will end up jumping sooner or later. every wrasse i have ever kept has ended up jumping. even when i had a top my mystery wrasse ended up jumping thru a small hole i ould have never though he could have made it thru or would find.

the four line i would stay away from because it will get territorial once he gets settled in and they are relentless in their aggressions . flashers would be great and the coris also would be a great tankmate as there are many to choose from . yes top must be covered very well as they are escape artists . i am partial to the leopards but they are initially a bit challenging but the most beautiful IMO . best of luck to you !

I have a cryptic six line wrasse they are very pretty and not agressive like the common six line wrasse and do not get that big, max is 3" at full adulthood

How about a mystery wrasse? would that be a good choice?

i honestly think a mystery wrasse needs a bigger tank myself. i had one in my 60g tank and i think that was even too small for it. but they are awesome fish and my favorite wrasse.

they are however abit more agressive then some other wrasse's from what i have seen.

Okay thanks for the info. I've got plenty of time to decide ... starting my tank in May and I want it nice and established before I add a predator like a wrasse
