WTB: 48" x 24" tank (24" or 31" tall)

I'm looking for a 48" x 24" tank with a height of 31" but I would settle for a 24" tall tank. It also needs to be Reef Ready and if not, have drill-able glass on the bottom so I can make it reef ready.

I would possibly go for a 60" if the price is right.

Willing to drive a ways for the right tank so hit me up if you or someone you know has what I'm looking for.

Thanks
Jamie

Trust me, you really don't want a 31" deep tank. You'll contaminate the water with deodorant every time you go to clean the bottom of the glass LOL. I laugh, but I found it to be true!

I think that would come down to how tall you are..... if you measure from finger tip to finger tip, it will be within an inch of your actual height unless you have monkey arms or elf arms:cool: I'm 6'2" so not a problem cleaning deep tanks. This tank is for my Poison Dart Frogs and it will have a 4-5" false bottom so cleaning the glass will be around 25" from the top. :bounce3:

Why do you need a bottom drilled tank for frogs?

read the last sentence in my last post ;)

This tank will be a Peninsula style tank with a waterfall on the background and a water feature near the middle.

I plan on building a false bottom where the 4-5" of water in the feature will drain to a sump and then pump back up to the top of my waterfall. I will make the false bottom out of light diffuser sheets and landscape fabric to keep the "floor" material(peat moss, charcoal, leaves, etc) from contaminating the water and ruining my return pump.

I'm looking for a 120 with those dims. Good luck finding one, and if you come across a second one ;)

I checked with a local fish store today and for a brand new 48x24x24 (120gal) NOT DRILLED was $599. tank only. So I'm gonna go to my local glass company and see how much just the materials will be for my project. Plus I plan on going with a thinner glass since my use for the tank will be PDFs rather than fresh or saltwater fish. With 5" of water only comes out to 25 gallons so glass thickness will not be a problem for me if I go the DIY route.

The price is outrageous nowadays. Like anyone's gonna buy a tank that expensive...
Hopefully you can save a good chunk by going with DIY.

Glass is not cheap anymore though. i was watching a few DIY Youtube videos and glass is around $15 per SQ FT, give or take a few bucks. So my DIY is still gonna be expensive but I will build it to the exact size I want. @ $15 sq ft, it will cost me over $400 so I hope my local glass company is cheaper than that or I may go with acrylic instead.

Let us know what prices you come up with for glass from the local guys. I'd like to eventually DIY my own 3' x 3' x 16" or 18" deep tank and put a center overflow in it. I'd be interested in knowing the price on 3/8" or 1/2" glass cut-to-size if you get it.

Thanks.

Go to glass cages . Com. I think a undrilled 120 is around 300.

I told myself I would never buy a tank from Glasscages but since this will only have around 30 gallons in it then I would feel comfortable putting it in my living room. Anyway, I called them for a quote.... and I beefed-up the tank a little dimension wise.....

48"x30"x30" with black frame(top and bottom). Bottom glass is 1/2" and sides are 3/8", NOT drilled is $450. Now, the same tank with thicker glass for fish use(sides are 1/2" and 3/4" on the bottom) NOT drilled is approximately $800-850.

I'm still gonna check with my local glass store but that $450 is looking really good for that size of a tank. and if I pay them a little extra to drill my holes then I will not void warranty. HHHMMMMMM, If I can get materials myself for less than $300 then I may go the DIY route. Anywho, off to the glass store.

I loved my Glasscages tank. They're not especially friendly to deal with but my tank was as stout as they come, had no sloppy silicon issues, and was CHEAP.

I went to two local glass shops and neither have 3/8" or thicker in stock. 1/4" is the thickest they have available. They said they could order it for me, pre-cut, but it would cost me around $270(tax included) for 3/8". That was 3 pieces 48"x30" (bottom and long sides), 2 pieces 30"x30"(both ends)

Now those are not the exact dimensions I need and it also does not include glass lids but you get an idea. And shopping around a little more might result in slightly cheaper prices.

I have no idea where to get the black framing if you wanted to go that route or what you could use as a frame to help sturdy the tank for fish use, unless you euro framed it with more glass but those tanks with glass framing and glass cross braces still scare me a little.

Mel, Shawn and I spent about 4 hours pick out his 300. The whole time asking the price and dimensions of almost every tank that was prebuilt. They appeared to be very happy to have us annoying people there.

That's really great to hear. I think the biggest issues with them are over the phone. They were really nice when I was at their facility too. Maybe they're just phone grouches. hah hah.
