I have a friend who's son is interested in getting a chameleon. However, he doesn't have any of the equipment or set up to do so. So, I figured I would check here to see if anybody had anytyhing or if maybe you guys knew of the best place to get this kind of stuff (captive born reptiles?)...any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

having kept chameleons before, please be aware of their care requirements. these aren't pets that you handle. and they need tall, mesh/screen enclosures. and they like to be above eye level. i know this is for your friend's son, but please make sure that they know what they are getting into.

Captive Born Reptiles has a store on Cleveland Ave. and another just opened here in Pickerington. The owner, Terry Wilkins, is probably one of the most knowledgeable herpers in the area. Get with him. He will steer you in the right direction for sure.

I agree, old world chameleons may not be the best choice unless he is a very experienced herper. Bearded dragons would be a much better choice, along with fat tail geckos or leopard geckos.

There is a reptile show and sale down in Columbus this weekend. I am not sure where they are held anymore, but I'm sure with a little searching it can be found out.

Thanks guys, I'll fill him in on this tomorrow when I see him. Probably try to steer him in the direction of something else...

I would recommend going to the all ohio reptile show and look for a guy by the name of Don Hamper. I have had and have heard of horror stories with Terry. Not saying he is a bad guy but a buddy of mine sells him all his ball pythons for his store and will leave it at that. In the CORA forum I saw a post for someone selling an adult male bearded dragon with setup for a really reasonable price.

I have some pretty extensive knowledge on reptiles if you need any questions answered I would be happy to help out. I am also in the process of getting rid of a few of my geckos as well. I know a few breeders that attend the Reptile show.

Terry is a great guy as Zeppelin mentioned. Captive born does some great work for the herp community.

Ya, I've known Terry for about 20 years now. He used to even help with our herp society in Northern Ohio (NOAH) when I lived up there. He is a huge asset to the Ohio herp community. He was stressing captive propagation 20 years ago, when the reptile swaps were primarily people bringing in wild caught ball pythons and green iguanas from Strictly Reptiles (wholesaler) in Florida the night before, and putting them out for sale at the swap the next day.
