WTB Chiller for 90 Reef Tank

Ryan,
Chillers are kinda expensive, this is just my suggestion but it would help keep down the heat if your lights arn't resting on the tank. So if you could mount them in a canopy or hang them that would help a lot and save you a lot of money. If they are all ready hung best of luck finding a chiller. I will keep my eyes open for one.

Maybe you are already doing this, but FANS FANS FANS:lol:

Seriously, you'd be surprised how much cooling you can get out of a little fan. Also as mentioned above, keep some clearance between the lights and the water, get some good air movement going and you may find a chiller is not needed.

I run 2-250 watt halides and 4 110 watt VHOs on my 90. It gets a little rough if you don't like to run your air conditioner, but otherwise mine stays cool using only 1 4inch Ice cap variable speed fan. Halides are about 7 inches off the water as are the VHO's. So, a chiller is not necissary, but if I had the cash I would love the temp stability.

I have a 1/10hp Artica chiller for sale on the Sioux Falls, SD website.

I had a number of pumps and 2x250HQI on the tank.
One time being gone for half a week evaporation caused the pump feeding the chiller to suck air and it showed the tank running without the chiller, spiking at 95 degrees.
This is a copy/paste from the Sioux Falls website:

Letting this one go for $375.00
New price is $499.99

It has been in my care for almost two years and performed above and beyond what I expected.

It was able to keep my total water volume of about 90 gallons at 79 degrees even when the ambient temperature was over 100 degrees.

Thanks Guys I need the chiller for my new setup I just moved my 90 reef back upstairs and sat my tank on my new stand i built soild walnut and canopy I outfitted it with t5s and 2 400 watt metal halides 20k i have 4 fans built in to the canopy it pulls air in and blows it across the water.I just dont like hearing the fans run for an hour every 2 hours. This is why I need a chiller. My lights are about 12 inches of the water.

Hey Ryan! IME, traditional chillers put out far more noise than a fan would. Not to mention they generate a ton of heat. The only chillers I know of that are quiet and efficient are the Ocean Geotronics and Deltec Eco Coolers. They're also the spendiest of them all. :(

If anything, try putting some fans over your sump. That should help some. I would also try shortening the MH photoperiod some and keep the T5's on longer.

I would like to put the chiller down in my stand so i can shut the door.I have heard a chillers noise to be the same as a mini fridge, the fans are high out put 120mm and they sound the a freaking leaf blower is in my office ,Ill take any suggestions you got ??Thanks Ryan

Putting a traditional chiller in your stand will only act as a heater. It would only defeat the purpose of trying to chill your tank. They put out a lot of heat. I had a Pacific Coast 1/4HP on my old tank and it was louder than what I had expected and did a really good job of heating up the entire room.

Any chance of putting the chiller in a remote location so you won't be able to hear it?

Why yes me and jj drilled a 2 inch hole in the floor yesterday to feed my auto top off and my water change pump i could put it in the basement will i have to have a pump on it it pump it up 10 feet ???

Sone is dead on right with the heat. I took mine offline when I had my 225 going, it was actually easier to cool w/out the chiller.

By putting your sump in the basement, you may find even less reason to need it. If, like most basements, its a little cooler, that combined with fans on the sump, may take care of it.

I put a 8" fan over my sump. I went from a high of 83-84 down to 79 at peak. My sump is in my basement. Just my 2 cents.

I didnt want to put my sump in the basement just the chiller my basement has in floor heat so in the winter it is about 72or3 in the basement same as rest of house.Am i able to put the chiller in the basement and just plumb down to it and back up?Thanks Ryan

If your temp is around 72 in your basement, man thats cheaper cooling than a chiller.

Understanding that may not work, yeah you could put the chiller in the basement, that would also work.

I was just thinking...

What if you bought one of those cheap little dorm fridges and ran a bunch of coiled tubing through it to act as a chiller? I know you would probably need to have a heater to maintain a constant temp but it might solve the problem...

i have a tiny (i think 1.7 cu ft.) mini fridge, its old but it still works well.

id sell it to ya for pretty cheap if you need one.

I thought I've read about a mini-fridge cooler, but I heard it was much more inefficient and ineffective than a chiller.

They dont work, TRUST me, been there done that. They dont have anywhere close to enough pull down power to keep up.

I will tell what will work, is a window A/C, I did this long ago on a 55 gallon tank using a 5000BTU A/C, worked great, though bulky and not the best thing to look at:)
