Hey guys im going to attempt DIY live rock
having trouble locating crushed oyster shells in the Brooklyn area....found everything else.
online the shipping is more than the product which kills me so i would rather try and find some at a store....so if anyone knows of where i could score some in bulk @ 20lbs bag or so i would appreciate it thanks

Do you have like a Farm&Fleet in the area? Or something like a Co-op.? Thats where I would begin checking if you havent already.

Yea I would assume that brooklyn isnt the ideal place for farming lol. Thats just where I found mine to make my own LR. The only problem I had was I didnt use white cement mix, mine was a bit greyish and I wished it were white just because im picky. I mean if there are any small towns in the area that do have some amount of persay chicken farming or something call around and see what you can find out. I would say just hit up google for a local farm and fleet or blains fleet farm, or something related to it and you may be in luck!

I tried looking but apparently there arnt many chicken operations in Brooklyn....lol
i was hoping someone local has made some DIY rock and would know of a source for the crushed oysters.....otherwise im going to have to bite the bullet and pay $25 for shipping on a $20 bag of crushed oysters.....not that its a huge amount of $ but it kinda sucks

well you dont have to do crushed oysters either man, you can do like small rock rubble, depending on the look you want...that may be easier to find then crushed oyster shells. you could probably find that in a lot more places. get a different assortment of sizes, mix it with some cement, and some rock salt in the mixture that you prefer and kind of go from there. trial and error. good luck bro

Thanks man.... I had my heart set on the oyster shells because of the calcium and ph properties....but if I can't track some down locally I might just switch to crushed coral....someone mentioned a pool supply place not to far from me that might carry some but were closed....so I'll give them a try in the morning

yeah man theres a lot of options, but crushed oyster shells definitely gives you the more genuine LR look as far as im concerned. Regardless your going to want to let that rock sit in a tote full of fresh water for at least a month and change the water in the first couple weeks at least 2-3 times and then the last week or so just once. and keep checking the levels on it to make sure theres no salt etc...
