OK... for what it's worth consider this...
If you've ever dove in the ocean, you'd notice that the water is full of particulate matter. The water is not crystal clear and polished.
It's the particulate matter that contains food and nutrients that your corals are trying to catch. It's the combination of planktonic life, fish waste, invert waste, excess fish food and coral waste that freely floats in the water column and travels throughout the reef feeding valuable nutrients.
That being said. Do we want excess waste floating around..? Well, not in large volumes we don't. But in small quantities, it's normal to some degree.
I've used filter socks and ultimately removed them because they stripped way too much particulate matter out of the water column. When I removed the socks, my corals really responded in a positive way. Longer polyp extension and general health appeared better. Don't forget that a good skimmer will adequately remove lots of particulate organic waste.
A couple other things to consider:
Don't over stock your reef with too many fish
Don't over feed. I feed three to four times a week conservatively.
Create large amounts of water movement inside the tank.
Consider using Ozone if applicable.
Use good reef husbandry skills by blowing between rock structures with a power head or turkey baster to free up detritus and mulm that may be stuck inside the reef structure.
And vacuum or clean the sump bottom where lots of waste and material tend to collect.
Hmmm... not preaching, just sharing what's worked very well for me these past two decades.
Cheers
