If anyone has a small quantity of LR out there that they are looking to either get rid of or sell for really cheap, please PM me.

I am just getting into the hobby and will be setting up my tank shortly. I have a 30 gallon 36"L x 12"W x 16"H tank that I really want to get going.

There will be plenty of pics of this project, please let me know.

Standard rule of thumb is you need at least 1 pound of live rock per gallon and can go up to 2 lbs per gallon. So I think you need much more than you think.

Also, you may want live sand.

If I was to do it over again, I would set up live rock and live sand with skimmer and sump installed, along with strong lighting. Saves much problems later on.

You may want to do research on the planning stage. I would do many things different.

PS. I know you have your tank, but you may want to look at some of those really nice nano tanks that have many of the issues figured out. Kind of like a kit that is well thought out.

Research this forum and there are some nice ideas when Joe from Atlantis was looking at a small tank for home.

Yes but every little bit helps, I know I am going to need at least 40 lbs or so of rock plus I am going to go with Black Pacific Sand.

I am not looking to get 40 lbs of rock from one single person but if there are people doing som aquascaping and find they have a couple of extra pieces that a couple of extra pounds I have to buy from the LFS.

I have been doing alot of research on this site as well as nano-reef.com and saltwaterfish.com and I am going to stick with this tank. I have a friend whos been in the hobby for a while now and he's been giving me pointers as well.

Look into that black sand, before you buy any. Posts I've read show folks not so happy with the look of it, as time goes by.

i agree with larry the black sand gets old. i had it in one of my fresh water tanks years agao and after a month it get real old.

i would do 1lb of live rock a gallon if you plan on soft corals. but if you are going to do hard corals eventually i would use about half that. hard corals need room to grow up and to much rock in the tank stunts there growth.

DgenR8,

1) I have Indo Pacific Arag Black alive very fine sand. It is really white sand mixed with black sand. This is very pretty. Not sure why it's called alive. However, I seeded it with live sand, and the only negative is that regular beige colored live sand is not the same pretty color. So again, this "black sand" is really black and white sand.

OneGreenRay,

2) Can you explain your comment on "hard corals need room to grow". I myself, just increased my live rock to 2 lbs / per gallon. I have a DSB and have problems with nitrates. I also got rid of several fish in the hopes of successfully battling to 0 nitrates.

Thank you,
