Anybody see any Mystery Wrasse in LFS's around the bay? Let me know! I'm looking =)

They're so awesome.

I may consider going liveaquaria, since they offer the 14 day guarantee =/

Art I got one at all about fish a few weeks ago. It was only 125 and it was 30% off because it was sunday. I bet they could order another. Its a great fish I had never paid much attention to them before because of the price, but now its one of my favorites

paul, did you get it at all about fish? I was eyeing that one and wanted to go on sunday to pick it up, but I was out of town that weekend on business, so I missed it!!

I will probably be getting rid of mine if you are interested. It will be in a couple of weeks.

hey matt, i'll pm you in a minute =) thanks.

paul: ah ok. I must have saw the same one then. any recent pix?

Those guys are just too agressive for my tastes... just barely better citizens that a 6 line (although much coooler looking). :)

To some extent I agree. Mine doesn't seem to bother many fish but he goes crazy when I throw in any type of shrimp. I can't have any cleaners, harlequins, or peppermints in my tank. Those of you that have seen my tank will recall my aptasia and astrina star problems. Thats the reason I am getting rid of mine. That's also the reason I am breeding berghia nudis. The wrasse doesn't go after those.

I have heard stories of them taking down various other species of fish, most bigger than the mysteri itself (which is why I always mentally draw the parallel between them and a 6 line :)). They are awesome kewl little fish, but just be sure you know what you are getting into when buying one :)

My large mystery took out two fire shrimps (pretty large), one cleaner shrimp (even though my other cleaner shrimp seems to be perfectly fine), and 6 peppermint shrimps. Talk about expensive fish food :(. I had some aptasia problems because of two beautiful rocks I bought, so I keep on throw in peppermint shrimps. For some reason, two survived the dinner plate, and are very slowly developing tastes for the aptasias. My mystery is very much scared of my blue tang though (I think the blue tang took a good bite on his tail in the past), and it will run away like there is no tomorrow everytime the blue tang is close by. In my tank, the blue tang is by far the biggest bully.

Matt,

are astrina stars what they call microstars, the tiny black-grey ones? what problems do they cause? i've seen some in my tanks and they only seem to appear when a coral is stressed or has some recession on the tissue...

Yes the are one of the microstars. They are the ones that usually have different arm lengths because of the way they split. They usually just eat diatoms but when there are a lot of them and not enough food they can eat corals. It isn't very common but it does happen. The ones that have some color to them are worse than the more common grey ones. My main problem is that the stars eat my nudi eggs. I can't put a harlequin shrimp in to eat them because the wrasse will eat it. I have a very bad combo of animals in my tank.

matt, just gotta figure out who's on top of the food chain..humans! get that fish out and eat it!

thanks for sharing...it happened to me, i once had alot of tissue recession on my corals and all these little stars (ASTERINA) start appearing. i read up on them and realize they're only opportunistic feeders, yes there probably wasn't enough food to go around anymore hence they start feeding on coral tissues but i'm not sure if they will feed on a healthy coral or a sick one with tissue already recessing...which is what I observed. I don't believe i've ever seen one on a healthy colony...anyways, you get my point...

wow, I have a bunch of microstars, but i don't think enough to start eating colony tissue.

will the wrasse eat a full sized cleaner shrimp?
