Last I heard (at Macna) was neptune APEX was in the low 2000's). Now I expect that has increased as well.
I also do not rank APex light and RKL in the same category due to module limits on the RKL. I has nothing to do with price in that regard to me. To me having 64, or 200+ module capability is marketing fluff.....I think most users like us would never use more than 10....I am sure someone somewhere may be using 50+..but it just isn;t usually what hobbyist level folk do hehe.
You are correct Andy, you cannot rank the RKL and Apex Lite in the same category, because the Apex lite is a better controller hands down, Like I said I own both. So why would you pay for a level 3 RKL when you could get an Apex Lite. You still have to buy more accessories for the Level 3 RKL to even get that to the Apex lites level and you have then spent more than what the lite would have costed in the first place. Most people DO look at price to compare apples to apples and in this case the price does not do the RKL justice.
And the reason you see a higher "install base" is because of the $99 RKL, which suckers people in, then realize they have to buy more stuff after to get it to do what a OOB Apex lite will do. Thats the whole DA marketing Fluff. I don't think "install base" numbers are an accurate way to tell how good a product is or isn't. BTW, MACNA was last year
and a lot of people have switched over from DA to APEX since then
