Does anyone know where I can purchase a Sebea Anemone (Heteractis crispa)? I know Trop-Quatics has them, but would prefer to not deal with them due to past expierences.

If you know some place could you please post a price if known. I want to add it in about 1 week so am in no big rush.

Thank You,
Alan

Reef Plus in N Aurora had one last Friday. It was bleached, but looked healthy otherwise.

What is with all of these bleached and dyed specimens. Somebody needs to get one, keep it alive/healthy and start propagating them. It's too bad that these idiots overseas (Indonesia I think) can get away w/ this dyeing b.s. Seeing the high number of poor quality specimens that enter the LFS, I think someone could probably make a decent buck if they were to propagate these and keep 'em healthy.

How can you exactly tell if it is dyed? I read that the yellow ones are dyed but then also read on a different site that the white ones are dyed? I have seen both at a LFS (unfortunately tropi-quatics) but am still wondering how to exactly tell which ones are dyed or not. I like the look of the white w/ purple tips but don't want to get one for fear of it being dyed and dying.

Thanks

White= Equals Bleached usually hard to bring back to life but it is possible. Many people fail due to poor living conditions for these anenomes.

Yellow= Dyed I would not get at all

Brownish/Greenish= Healthy most likely established and has its Zooanthelle

Thanks for the help

I am trying to find a good host for my Percula Clowns. I read that Sebaes were natural hosts to them and liked the looks of them, but all I can find are the dyed ones.

How about an H. magnifica? They'd be a good host right? Does anyone know where I could get one, am willing to drive for it. I've been to Rod's and thought that he had some.

Is there a way to tell if they are dyed too?

Thanks for all the help

FWIW: anemones are one thing I would personally like to see in the store before buying. The condition that you buy an anemone will greatly determine your immediate success in keeping it alive. Trying to nurse an unhealthy anemone back is a bit of an uphill battle that can be avoided by selecting a good specimen.

From what I've seen, many times anemones are in less than acceptable condition. Besides the bleaching & dying mentioned already, you also want to make sure the foot is healthy, its mouth isn't gaping open, tentacles are sticky, etc.

I have a sebae I bought at LFS on impulse (I know, bad thing to do). When I got it home, I started to do some research only to find many people claiming sebaes are hard to keep. I was feeling pretty bummed about that, but luckily my sebae is doing very very well. The thing is just huge now (maybe 10 inches across, probably only 4 inches when I bought about 5 months ago) and my 2 clowns don't go more than a few inches away from it. Most of the time my male clown can't even be seen cuz the sebae's tentacles are so long it covers him up completely. But he does come out every once in a while, probably just to make sure the female is still hanging around (she likes to guard the area while the male tends to just lay down in the sebae).

I've also heard that sebaes don't split like other anenomes...not sure if that's true or not.

HTH,
Rob

Thanks for the help Rob,

I guess I will just wait to see if a LFS will get one in soon or could possibly order an un-dyed one?

Unless someone out there has a Med-Small one they want to sell:p

Thanks again,
Alan

I was at Birds & Beasts in Crystal Lake yesterday. They had a few..I can't remember the colors, but they were there.

Rod's Sebea

Rod's Sebea

Well, I've decided to head out to Rod's today, saw on his website that he has a H. Crispa that looks really nice. Hopefully he still has one in stock, if not, I'm still going :D .

If/when I get one I will post a picture of it for everyone. I just hope my clown goes for it since he's been trying to host my GSP recently since the other True Perc died a week ago.

Hopefully under my new set-up, 150w MH 10k w/ 2x 18w Actinics, this Sebea will thrive.

Will let you know how things turn out,
Alan

So hard to keep .... I've had 2. 1 made it 3 mos. (Bleached when I bought it). The other lived about a year. Good luck. Make sure it's brown with purple tips when you get it.
