wtb: uv sterilizer

anyone selling a coralife turbo twist uv sterilizer for a 90 gallon reef tank? does it really help with ich i have a little problem with ich right now but dont have room for a qt. i was researching online and someone wrote that they used this and they havent had ich since what do you guys think let me know thanks

not really the cure all. if you dont have a qt, i would suggest garlic extreme soaked in the food you feed, and see what other stressors you have. ie, agressive fish, but mostly check you water parameters. if your ph is low it will increase the stress level of the tank and get much worse.

I've seen many debates about the effectivness of a UV Sterilizer, make sure you do your research on all the pros/cons before you invest any money

Dosing vitamin C has worked for my fish. You can use it in conjunction with the garlic. Just be warned, the ich will always be in your system, to attack a new or stressed fish.

There are only 3 ways to KILL marine ich. They are hyposalinity, copper, and the transfer method. If you dont want to QT your fish, help them fight it off by feeding them alot and removing any stressors....

Once you dont see the ich on them doesnt mean anything, it is still in your system, just at a different stage or the fish just arent showing....

A UV only kills what passes through it, so you will never get rid of all ich with it, only the parasites that go through the UV. Unfortunately the UV also kills good stuff that goes through it. IMO, UV's are a waste of money.

Agreed, my tank is fallow as we speak so i can rid of ich and flukes while treating the QT. I've also found boosting temps to 80 degrees helps along side good diet and water quality if you want to temporarily treat ich. Wiz

i heard that raising the temp actually speeds up the parasites life cycle. so if it is mild, it could go to out of control very rapidly.

That is only for FW. You can actually do harm to your fish by raising the temps while treating cyrpt (SW "ich"). Makes it difficult for them to breathe, since the parasite infests their gills too.

In their printed catalog they claim a Diatom Filter is so fine that it will filter out ick... but I'm sure its the same as a UV its only as good as what passes through it.

I did not know fish have trouble breathing at 80F. I'm surprised any of my fish are still alive.

That's not the post I was referring to or quoted.

Crypt is not very sensitive to temperature changes. That is, increasing the temperature does not significantly decrease the life cycle time. This is not true with Freshwater Ich (which is where this rumor of raising the temperature on a marine aquarium with MI comes from). Crypt can live and reproduce in temperatures as low as 50F and as high as 90F. Thus temperatures that would kill MI would first kill or severely stress most tropical marine fishes.

QT is not always an appropriate solution depending on the fish. Example: Sohal Tang. Since most QT's are not 6ft long and don't have alot of grazing food, this method may stress the fish out more?
