Xavier's 120 Gallon Journal

12/7 UPDATE:

Got some Lepidozygus tapeinosoma from Capistrano Reef today. I had never seen them before and no one knew what they were. I took a video and posted it on RC and I had my answer in the first 15 min (such a great resource).
These shocked me more than any other fish I have ever had for a couple of reasons. First, I had never seen one before and that was intreguing unto itself. But more interestingly, they CHANGE COLORS! When I got them they were kind of a dark dull blue, but they were schooling fish and at a pretty good price so I got them. When I got them into the tank, they turned a dark green, and throughout the period of an hour they changed from blue to green to light green to purple to orange and back to purple and green. Super cool and very interesting to watch.

Here is a little video of them in the store, just CLICK it

There isnt much info on these guys, so I will try to learn what I can and make a log on them.

On another note, I also fixed my sketchy plumbing situation (I had a 3/4" soft vinyl tube pressure fitted, with the help of near boiling water, into a 1" barbed fitting, which didnt seem all that safe)
Also tested water levels on the sump with the power off to make sure that the return plumbing didnt back siphon too much.

This was the skimmer today, after about 24 hrs of skimming! :)

8/8/2011 UPDATE: 7pm

I went to Sandbar on my lunch break at school and they had another Fusilier's Damsel!! I had never seen one before yesterday, then two days in a row! ...so I bought it! Total:5

Then I went to Capistrano Reef on my way home to stop by and say hi to Ron, and because my friend Chris (chris949) needed to get his water tested. While we were there, I saw some really cool sponge growth on their live rock.
My thinking on sponges is that they are an essential part to any reef. I have done a lot of research and talking to people in the hobby about the need for them on any given reef, and I am a firm believer in having a solid sponge foundation. Knowing this, you can understand why I bought the rocks haha
So then I was all ready to go home with my sponge-encrusted rock and fish but wait, theres more!
Ron was going to throw some lights away, and asked if I wanted them, so I said yes (I'm a hoarder) then he gave me a killer deal on the ballast and threw in some endcaps with them. So I now have 2 VHO SuperActinics ready to put under the canopy!
They are SUPER ACTINICS. So I am very excited.

Mikey:
2 actinic Bluewave
1 ATI Purple Plus
1 IceCap Deep Water 14,000k

I am going to go shopping in that box of bulbs you have to find the perfect combo! Hopefully I can get them hung today. More PAR than my 150 watt halides and less than half of the electricity! Woot!

Anyone need 150 watt halides for their tank?

Cool. They're all used, but some only slightly (<1 month).

Sorta New-Ish
Wavepoint Reef Wave 420 nm actinic, low PAR but looks great
Wavepoint Coral Wave (blend of 420nm actinic & red spectrum, looks purple)
Wavepoint Sun Wave "11,000K"

Used Bulbs (only good for testing color combinations)
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue special
Current 10000k
Current 460nm

Update 12/12/11-12/13/11
Switched lights from 150 watt halides with mismatched color spectrums to a 4 bulb Wavepoint T5HO Retrofit.
The bulb set up is currently:
2 actinic Bluewave
1 ATI Purple Plus
1 IceCap Deep Water 14,000k
but I plan to change that, because it is a little too purple for me.

I love the light though, cant wait to buy more corals and fish.
I think I am going to get some Rod's Onyx clowns (A. Percula) and maybe a carpet anemone, but I might wait on the anemone.

What do you think? Sorry the camera definitely likes taking pictures under halides better..
