Not Mine, but dominated

Not my tank, fellow reefer (benf here on RC). This is one of his MANY tanks.

.
IME, xenia are sensitive to alkalinity and do not do so well in a severely nutrient poor environment like a pristine SPS reef
I dunno agree! mine does remarkably well inmy sps setup and the soker spreads like wildfire tha's why its at the top and corners and that's it:mad:

Keep em coming guys.. I have to take some pics of my elongatas.. my Tunze fires directly at them and the stalks literally stretch to almost 10" :eek2:

This tank is filled with umbellata. I have to pull at least 12 stalks every 2 weeks. I've tried giving some away but nobody wants to drive to stamford ct to pick some up.

Theres also a huge green sinularia that i will be thinning out. Again if anyone wants to pick it up for free pm me.

these are some really nice tanks! Xenia is one of my favorite corals!

saltycreefer:
do you have any specs on your tank? that elegance coral is amazing!
Lavith:
I really like your aquascaping and that goniopora is amazing! It is HUGE

NIIIIIIICE! Nice xenias everyone.

Does anyone have pics of a tank that is covered with blue cespitularia? I'd like to see that!

well guys, a year later and I regret to say that my whole Xenia infestation ended up in a mishap. I re-aquascaped my tank so I took all the corals out (the Xenia covered 2 HUGE live rocks), put them in the sump and forgot about them. When I did a water change 2 weeks later, they were GONE :(

I have converted to an SPS dominated tank since then.. :D

This may be a dumb question, but. When you say Nutrient rich water. What are the Nutrients?

I read a SPS tank needs a less nutrient tank compared to soft corals. I was just wondering what are the nutrients?

Does it mean Phytoplankton and things like that?

I have been fighting to get rid of xenia in my tank. It will not quit growing. I keep mine cornered off by a frogspawn. I have given away god knows how many frags of it and it will not stop growing. I have ripped pieces off the rock only to have it regrow. I know now why they call it the weed of the ocean. I recently converted to sps so I cant have those stray pieces laying around. They would even grow over my zoas. The only things that will stop it are anemones and euphylia.

EXACTLY!

I couldn't wait to get a nice fat stalk of xenia growing and all I can say now is be careful what you wish for. I find little stalks growing out of and in between everything. I had a big old snail that had a good sized stalk growing on his back.

LOL my royal urchin carries pieces around with him. The xenia are not fond of it so I pull them off and throw them in the refugium.

There's an often repeated story of a hotel in Hawaii who discharged their sewage near a coral reef. The Xenia covered everything around the discharge pipe. When the state environmental agency forced the hotel to quit discharging sewage into the ocean, the Xenia died out.

^ That's an interesting story. A few years back, somebody conducted an experiment here in RC about overskimming. He ran multiple skimmers on a low-bioload tank and at the same time he also tried to grow Xenia. After like 2 months, and ULTRA CLEAN water, the Xenia is still alive and doing well.
