Xenia Problem

I have had pulsating xenia for about 6 months now if not longer. It has done really well..grown a ton.Recently some of the xenia has changed to a purple color and stay sheivled. I have tested several times and have found i was low on calcium. I have been adding b ionic almost every other day for about 3 weeks. I awoke this morning and found that two stumps of xenia were brown. One looked like it was fried. The other looked as if it was melting. After reading i know that they dead. I removed them from the tank. Should I have done that? I really just want to make sure that this is not a diease..Because when i took the "dead" xenia out i am sure that i spread it. Has anyone had this problem? I have a lot of LPS and had brown jelly diease a while back. I just want to make sure i didnt make a bigger problem for myself..Thanks!

Can you post a picture, that will help.

Also, how's your skimming (ie: dry, wet). I've read that Xenia don't like overskimmed tanks and I've had that experience also when I had a "wetter" skimmate. After dialing a dryer skimmate the xenia bounced back.

Good luck,
Glenn

I have sent you a message due to the fact that i cannot post a picture ha i dont know how..but for the most part my skim is dry almost always..Could it be that i replaced two light bulbs..They are different then what was originally in the fixture...? I had my water tested today and the LFS said everything was fine..soo i am just hoping that this is not a disease..Thanks!

Also..if you think it could be a disease..would it be beneficial to use my coral dip?..i really dont wanna loose any corals after dealing with brown jelly disease

It's highly possible that the new bulbs have caused the issue since the overall PAR output will have increased with the newer bulbs - have other corals been affected post bulb change? May take a few days for the coral to readjust to the light output.

Not sure if I would dip yet, maybe someone can chime in.

Other than that, just keep an eye on it. Xenia are supposed to be fairly hardy but I know that some folks have no issues keeping them (for me they're almost a weed), while the other half can't keep them alive and aren't sure why.

sometimes like mine i feel like they go through a phase mine recovered after a while and are nice and healthy now!

at any given time I have aprox 30 heads for about 5 yrs now. 2 years ago, I had 2 out of the 30 do this. they died. I've never had it happen again.....from time to time I wish it did though since they grow like weeds.
