ive got a xsi and im looking at more lenses to get, but i dont know what i want, so what do you think is a good lens to have in the bag. right now i have the 55mm wide angel that came with the xsi, a tamron 70-300mm telephoto and a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Compact Macro, so my question to you is what else should i have in the bag. id also like to add that i prefer canon glass, also what is a good shutter release to pick up

i take pictures of mostly outdoor nature scenes and my tank, although i dont have the macro yet, itll be here Wednesday. what im mainly looking for is something that is a must have in everyones lens collection for general purpose shooting

No lens is a must-have but I can list a few off that everyone in their right mind would want to have:
24-70 f/2.8 or 24-105 f/4 IS or 17-55 f/2.8 IS
135mm f/2 (great value!)
85mm f/1.2 and/or 85mm f/1.8
50mm f/1.8,f/1.4, or f/1.2
35mm f/1.4
17-40mm f/4
70-200 f/2.8 IS, f/2.8, f/4 IS, or f/4
100mm f/2.8 Macro and/or 180mm f/3.5 Macro

My personal must haves that I wouldn't want to be caught dead without are the 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 IS. Those are my powerhouse lenses. They make me fell like I am playing a game of chess with two queens. :)

The lenses TS recommended are all very well regarded in the Canon world. You can read about each in detail on this site:

On a side note, TS, I have been shooting with primes only for the past 8 months and I just put on a 70-200 my friend bought. It is really crazy after all that time how differently I shoot because I'm used to not having a zoom ring. I pretty much had no concept of what focal length the lens was set at and started foot zooming around to get shots.

For a walk around lens I'm loving my Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. Stays on the camera 90% of the time.

On the shutter release, when I had my Rebel XT I used the RC1 infrared remote. Worked fine.
