Yellow and blue tang

I have a month and a half old 80 gallon marine set up with a juvenile yellow and blue tang. The tank has 40lbs of live rock and a 3 inch deep layer of crushed coral substrate. I have 216 watts of T5 lighting for my frogspawn frag. The filter is a wet-dry and is meant for a 150 gallon and has a built in skimmer and HOB overflow. So far all has been good and I'm feeding my tangs algae mixed brine shrimp and algae tablets. Both of my fish are eating heartily.

The tank is always between 78 and 79 degrees and the salinity is kept at 1.024. Nitrates and ammonia are both at zero.

I have been told my tank was large enough for these fish by the Lfs and Aquarium Domain, however I would like to have a second opinion on my setup for kicks and giggles.

i would get rid of them both before they get aggressive towards each other and stressed out, then get ich.... after they are out i would look into a tomini or a kole tang. i have a kole in my 75 and hes awesome

I would advise the same depending on the dimensions of your tank 4'x18" or bigger would be what'd I advise. The other thing is, you should wait until your tank is a little by older so there is more on the rock to graze on.

It's unfortunate, but more often than not an LFS will advise you incorrectly for the sake of a buck. It shows no foresight because people will find somewhere else to go. Sorry you are in this situation, but you may find a place that takes trades.

They don't get ich unless there is ich in the tank; regardless of their stress level. Sooner or later, any tank with ich is going to be a real nightmare.

Tuskfish, with regards to ich. Can it come in on live rock? Thanks

It can come whit anything wet. If LR has been in a facility without fish for 12 weeks, you're safe. It can even arrive by coral & other inverts; but taht's quite raer. ( assume). If you, and don't know its history; then a 12 week fallow period is in order. Corals, shrimp are ok after a few days in a QT. Of course, if these inverts come from a 12 fishlesyou should never ride your bike near a punk bands environment, then their good. Just a heads up; I've seen coral/invert systems that appear fishless, but followed the plumbing and its just one big system.

The worst part of ich treatment/prevention may be that nothing is 100% certain. But I'm convinced that most failures are due to little errors by the hobbyist. Absolutely nothing should touch water in a DT or QT that hasn't been disinfected.

I was always told a fish could get ich if it got very stressed? But I'm only a year into the hobby so I could be wrong

It would be more accurate to say they are more susceptible to ich when stressed. Meaning if ich is in the environment, a stressed fish is less likely to fight it off.

i dont want to jack the thread but i just want to make sure on this.... so if my tank has no ich.... a stressed out tang will not get it?

I've kept two tangs in a 125 gallon tank for 10 years . Of course those were the only two fish. If you ditch one of the tangs. I think you will be fine..
